A Catholic Introduction to the Bible: The Old Testament

Excellent Commentary
Very pleased with this OT Commentary. Happened to come across Melkizedec-King of Salem (spelling is incorrect but I am too lazy right now to find the correct spelling) and learned so much I was amazed. Can't believe it is priced so low because it is a very large text. I would say this is a must-have for anyone interested in an OT Commentary.Waiting for the NT to arrive.

Excellent for learning and as resource
John Bergsma is a highly respected Old Testament scripture scholar. This book is like a brain-dump of his knowledge. Its writing is easily accessible, meaning can be understood by those of us who are not scholars, yet also has such pertinent information as to serve as a good resource for those more scholarship-minded.

A must have in your Catholic Library
"A Catholic Introduction to the Bible" stands as a commendable resource for individuals seeking a thorough exploration of the Bible from a Catholic perspective. Bergsma and Pitre's collaborative effort succeeds in making complex theological concepts approachable, fostering a deeper appreciation for the richness of the Scriptures within the Catholic tradition.Hope they write one for the New Testament.

This book is a gem.
The content of this book is priceless. The edition of this book is awesome. It is a thoroughly reader-friendly edition. It has a pleasant to the eye ivory colored pages. The comfortable, large size print. The comfortable spacing between the lines. Your eyes never get tired and you want to read more and more. The paper is of high quality. This books looks and feels as being much more expensive than its price.

Amazing book for the right audience
Please see photo of the Table of Contents and intended audience. This book is for people that want a more scholarly approach to the Old Testament. It is a huge book. Bigger than my Bible! It is not for new readers of the Bible. For that I recommend the Bible Timeline series through Ascension Press or Jeff Cavin’s book Walking with God. This is for readers who want to take a deeper look at the Old Testament. If you are a big fan of Pitre’s YouTube channel, you will love it!

Beautiful book
I just received my copy today and I can say that I was pleasently surprised. This is a gorgeous book and the presentation is amazing on its own, much more than I expected.A word of warning though, it's on the heavy side and it's quite big so I don't think I can carry it with me, it kinda looks like a home Bible in terms of size and weight. As far as the content, I haven't finished it yet, but from my experience Dr. Pitre always has a lot to contribute.Overall if it's anything like Pitre's "The case for Jesus" then it is definitely one of the best purchases I've made through amazon.***UpdateSo the book is well balanced and seems to strive to keep in mind not only the latest research and scholarly information, but it also provides a bit of background into the cultures, languages and myths that lie behind many of the referneces in the Bible.I think the biggest strength is its attempt to keep an impartial view as much as it can. On the other hand, this means that some books do not get as indepth a treatment as possible, specially toward the end of the book. That being said, it's definitely full of insights for those of us who have not formerly studied the ANE, and it does so from a perspective that is not afraid of being open to the faith.

LOVE THIS BOOK
This is such a beautiful exploration of the Old Testament. I would argue that a better name for the book would be "A Catholic Exploration" or "A Catholic Commentary," as this book does cover major themes rather than great detail, but it is still certainly more advanced than what someone might assume is a "beginner." I believe the introduction indicated that the authors were thinking of graduate students as an audience, but that it can be available to anyone who is interested in learning more about Scripture. Each section discusses one book at a time, and covers major themes, how it has been interpreted in history, how it is used in the liturgical life of the Church, and how it relates to other books of the Bible. Overall, I highly recommend it.

Some questions that need answering
As has been observed by numerous other contributors, this is an outstanding work. What has prompted me to comment however, is the discovery that the Kindle Edition is more expensive than the hard back edition. (I am using the hardback edition.) I am also troubled by the fact that you get the same list of reviews regardless of the format. There does not appear to be reviews specific to the Kindle edition ? I would like to have it in the kindle edition for ease of research, but I, and I am sure others, would like to be reassured that the kindle format is, so to speak, up to the job.
