Some reviews commented on the smell. DMSO does smell like garlic for just a few minutes on application and you really cannot remove the smell. DMSO is dimethyl sulfoxide, an organosulfur compound with the formula (CH3)2SO. It is a very simple molecule, non-toxic since the liver can break it down very easily. All it has is 2 methyl groups, one sulfur molecule, and one oxygen. The reason it smells is the sulfur. Garlic contains the organosulfur compound allicin which is kind of like 3 DMSO molecules almost. It has 6 methyl groups, 2 sulfurs, and one oxygen. The benefit of DMSO is that it is a great anti-inflammatory agent and it penetrates the inflamed region you are treating. It is a universal solvent. There is very little blood flow in your joints, so oral medications do not easily reach areas of inflammation. Some prescription medications get around this by dissolving the medication in DMSO so that the medication can reach the tissues. Diclofenac sodium topical solution is an example. There are hazards to DMSO because it is such a great universal solvent and penetrator of tissues. If the DMSO contains impurities or picks up impurities, it will transport those impurities into the body. For this reason this brand is particularly good, since it has a very very high purity level. When you use it, be careful to apply to a clean area of skin. If you just applied makeup or lotion or changed your motor oil, that is going to go into your system carried by the DMSO. I talked to a guy once who thought DMSO was a universal cure-all, so he applied it to a spider bite. Instantly the spider toxin coursed through his body and he was lying on the couch in pain. DMSO is not a good thing to get into your eyes. That is why I like this roll-on product. The drawback is that it is 100% DMSO. Studies have shown that the anti-inflammatory effect is best at 70%. I wish that the manufacturer would use their very highly purified 100% DMSO and dilute it in water to a 70% solution as a roll-on. The 100% stings the skin a little when you apply it. I don’t notice a sting at 70% and the lower dilution would also decrease the odor. What I do now to lessen the sting is to put some plain water on my skin before applying, so that I am getting a bit of dilution effect that way. It is a great product and works brilliantly for any inflamed joints or tendons, or for back pain.

This really works. I do recommend only putting it directly on your joints. It seems to get red and itchy on the regular skin areas. But that just may be me. I used it on my hand and knee joints for 3 days and I can close my hand now.

Works well on my neuropathy. I found that if I roll this on, and then put a thin layer of caster oil (it's what Edgar Casey used) on top, it reduces the slight burn and helps the DMSO to absorb.
