Sony RDR-HXD790 120GB Hard Drive and DVD Recorder

Works great with my Sony television it’s a second hand referbuished but works okay hopefully will last a while

I've used this for a number of years and really like it. Initially it was my only freeview tuner, and it was a bit of a pain not having twin tuners (so could only record what I was watching) but now my TV has a freeview tuner this isn't a problem. Quality is good in SP. With a 20" CRT I used to find LP acceptable, but now I have a larger LCD and recording from freeview LP doesn't really cut it. This device has the smallest HDD in the range (I have read it is actually 160GB but restricted by firmware / formatting). However, I find it adequate, either wiping programmes after watching or copying them to DVD. I've also used it to copy all my VHS tapes to DVD, I've probably written at least 150 DVDs on this unit and only had one or two fail, and they were unrecognizable discs when loaded for formatting. (Note, if you plan to do this: more recent commercial VHS tapes have a copy protect signal and the device won't record them - avoidable by putting a professional composite video interface such as a vision mixer between the two - I am destroying the original so don't see a problem making one copy to a non-obsolete format). So pretty reliable. Manual is very comprehensive (and quite technical), the device is very feature laden, e.g. including many different record modes.Only a few negatives:EPG is very slow and laggyNo search by keyword on the EPG (is possible in the GuidePlus EPG, but can't use that now analogue signal has ended)Text input (e.g. for titling) is possible using the number buttons on the remote, but they are not labelled as such (also other undocumented buttons in titling mode on the remote - could all be labelled in another colour)Functionality of the USB interface is limited - would be nice to be able to copy MP3s and video files to/from USBCan't find all the freeview channels that my TV doesDoes not support HD freeview channelsWon't play back certain material while recording other - can't remember the details - you can play back a recording while recording using the tuner, I think its something like you can't play back while recording from an external input.
