Hello, A few drops of the solutions are simply added to the small testing "dish". The alligator clip is then attached to the piece of jewelry that is being tested and the piece is dipped in to the solution. The unit will then light up and indicate the karat value. The unit does come with an operation manual which explains this process in more detail. Thank you!
