Just got it - it’s a little pricey but supposedly it has neural nets on it: • You don’t get a full ML framework preloaded. • You do get the ability to run small CNN models right on the chip, without having to ship every frame to a GPU. Potentially good for object detection…will update soon 💚🖖😊

Bei mir läuft die Objekt Erkennung damit ganz gut. Einfach KI-generierten Beispielcode verwendet, compiliert und drauf geflashed. Vorher die Cam mit dem Raspi 5 ordentlich verbunden, neu gestartet, läuft

I initially picked this camera to use with a Raspberry Pi for an edge AI detection setup, but ran into driver and compatibility limitations when trying to integrate it into a real-time computer vision pipeline. What worked: • Clean hardware integration with the Raspberry Pi • Stable connection through the CSI interface • Good starting point for basic camera use Where I ran into issues: • Limited driver support for advanced AI workflows • Compatibility challenges when trying to integrate with real-time detection pipelines (OpenCV / AI models) • Not ideal for more demanding inference setups Because of that, I ended up moving my detection pipeline to a Jetson Orin Nano, where GPU acceleration and better AI ecosystem support made a big difference. Big takeaway: This camera works fine for standard Raspberry Pi projects, but if you’re planning to run real-time detection or AI workloads, you’ll want to consider your full stack — hardware, drivers, and inference support. For edge AI use cases, platform choice (like Jetson vs Pi) matters just as much as the camera itself.

A little bit of work to get it going. Tried the example Python programs from Sony since this is their IMX500 sensor. Lots of weird problems, then I figured out I also needed to increase VRAM to 512 and install GPL drivers in addition to the IMX500 package. This may be dependent on the attached monitor.
