Excellent Read
I'm surprised this wasn't made into a movie. It would make serious bank as a motion picture I feel. Great read. Recommend for monster and horror lovers.

A magic octopus?
I was expecting a story about vampires but all I got was some old lady droning on about a 'magic octopus looking for his missing eighth cowboy boot'. Not amused.

Decent dramatization, so-so story
I got this Audible Original audiobook for free with my Audible membership. This was a decently done full dramatization audiobook. I actually liked the way the dramatization was done here, normally I am not a huge fan of this.Laura is a sheltered and loved young lady but she is lonely. When a carriage has an accident near their castle, Laura and her father take in a young girl named Carmilla while Carmilla’s mother goes for help. This is the start of a fast friendship between Laura and Carmilla. Only then things start to get a bit weird. The story was fairly short and was a very typical vampire story done in classic "Dracula" fashion. There are some small twists to the story but it is very similar to the original “Dracula” story. This story is advertised as being an erotic horror...I wouldn't really call it erotic...there are some vaguely sensual scenes in here but nothing explicit or more detailed than kisses.Overall I thought this was fine but didn't love it. It's very Gothic Victorian horror, if you enjoyed the original “Dracula” book you might enjoy this as well.

good story
The dramatization was very good. The story was also good and held your attention.

Carmilla
This was a good story.I'm not much into the theatrical audiobooks.I felt the break in announcing that this was part1,2,etc were annoying. Narration by the cast was good, but overacted in some parts.

Great Cast, Shallow Script
I adore Carmilla. I've written a book about Carmilla, and my own live theatre adaptation. I so enjoy seeing many of varied versions of adapting Le Fanu's masterpiece. Likewise in terms of casting one could hardly ask for better! But the script inserts a pointless character (Dr. Hessellius) for no good reason I can see other than to provide exposition. No hint of nuance, subtext or ambiguity was allowed. Which means a remarkable deep, complex classic of the gothic genre ended up rather less sophisticated than a Hammer horror flick.

Audible Review
Overall 3 out of 5 starsPerformance 4 out of 5 starsStory 3 out of 5 starsEntertaining Production.I have to remind myself this isn't a contemporary vampire story, it actually precedes Dracula. It's pretty simplistic and I'm not sure how you wouldn't know what the "twist" was from the very beginning. It was enjoyable overall, thanks to the entertaining production.***Purchased through the Audible Original option so I'm not sure why this isn't showing up as verified.

Good vampire story predating Stoker
Written decades before Stoker’s Dracula, I am as astounded as I was in reading Stoker at how modern the story feels. Equally surprising is the erotic nature of the tale and I wonder if reading it rather than listening to the narrators’ breathless rendition would feel different. Dracula is better but this one is good too and puts a new light on Stoker’s work.
