GE vs Amazon Premium filter: who do you trust?
Filters are one of those products that you have to accept manufacturer published specs for. There's no way to test these without the resources of a lab. It's all about trust.GE is a major league engineering firm, has a ~130 year history and like many large and established US engineering companies is highly process driven, innovative and fully embraces quality control and data driven results. The published specs for their MWF filter are below. One caveat: The GE Appliances sub-brand is now owned or controlled by Chinese company Haier and KKR, an American global investment firm. Unknown how much of the typically high performing and capable GE culture and run rules will remain intact over the long run. For the time being, GE appliances is still headquartered in the states. Unknown where the manufacturing takes place but if not in the US, the products are probably subjected to a high level of scrutiny and quality control before entering the world marketplace. The Amazon filter uses coconut shell carbon for the filter media. The GE seems to use another carbon source or at least doesn't publish what they use. Proprietary info maybe? More likely is that I simply wasn't able to find info about this when I searched. I suspect that coconut shell carbon is a less expensive alternative to what GE uses. If true, this doesn't necessarily mean that it's less effective. Again, the safety and efficacy of these filters boils down to trust. Regardless and cost no object, I'd go with the GE.Note that when installing a new water filter, most if not all brands require flushing the filter first. This is to purge air from the system.Step 1: first fill the filter from a tap.Step 2: Install the filter.Step 3: run a couple of gallons of water through the filter before using. The amount of the flush will vary by the type and size of filter. GE recommends flushing it's MWF with 1-2 gallons before using. When replacing a family member's filter of a different type and unlike the MWF filters I use in my refrigerator, the water was cloudy during the flush. It took about 3 gallons of flush before the water cleared up. The filter was an aftermarket brand, a Drinkclear EDR2RXD1, filter 2 for a Maytag refrigerator.I'd also recommend removing and inspecting the ice maker if this hasn't been done in a long time. When doing this with my family members refrigerator, I found a bit of brownish grime in the ice maker. Most ice makers are easily removable, placed in a kitchen sink and cleaned with dish soap and hot water.I like that the GE pharmaceutical filtration is third party tested. Third party testing demonstrates a high level of confidence in a product. Amazon's advertising for pharmaceutical filtration doesn't mention third party verification. You'll have to accept the manufacturer's word that it is effective for the relatively fewer pharmaceuticals listed vs the GE filter. If I lived in an area where water management is suspect or in a heavily populated area with tsunamis of mystery sewage being flushed or otherwise sent down the drain to a water management plant, I'd go with the GE.The level of filtration you need goes hand in hand with how well your local municipality does with water management. The city I live in is diligent about water quality and publishes an annual and detailed report of the testing. They test for thousands of contaminants. In other words, the water in my area is most likely safe for consumption. Not true in all areas. If your water is managed by a transparent and professional municipality, is well funded and staffed, going with a 'lesser' filter than the GE is probably OK. The primary reason I use a filter is to filter out hard water taste.About the water pressure spec for the GE filter: GE's spec is 40 psi min, 120 psi max. If you have less than 40 psi in the water line feeding the filter, no worries according to GE customer service. The only downside is that ice production may be slower at pressures lower than 40 psi. No issues with water filtration performance. Note that I reached out via email to GE's customer service and got a clear and concise response from an engineer, not a customer service rep reading from a script. Rare. The Amazon Premium filter's pressure spec is 20-100 psi. This implies that the housing isn't as strong as the GE's. Very difficult to know if this means that the Amazon Premium filter poses a significant burst or leakage threat relative to the GE filter. For most households I'd guess not. I suppose that if your water has been turned off in preparation for travel or plumbing work, be mindful about opening a faucet in the house before restoring the water. This may prevent a damaging spike of pressure into your water lines. This should be done anyway, not because of any single product in your house connected to a water line. So, should you buy the Amazon filter? If you have good water management in your municipality, I'd cautiously say yes. That said, I will probably buy only the GE MWF going forward. Assuming that you don't exceed the 300 gallon usage before the 6 month replacement interval is reached, the GE will cost only about $0.26/day. This was calculated at the present price of $47.00 for a single filter (47 / 180). If you buy from GE's Amazon store front, there is currently a three pack for about $70.00 which drops the unit price to about $23.00 per unit or $0.13 per day (70 / 540). Compare that to the cost of bottled water. The Amazon Premium filter specs are above in the advertising. The listed specs are significantly less comprehensive than GE's published specs. For the curious, there's more detailed info in GE's site as I would expect from an engineering firm. Maybe Amazon has more detailed info about it's filters but I wasn't able to find it. Save lots of money versus buying at a home improvement store
These water filters are identical to those from the big box home improvement stores. These cost a fraction of the same item at those stores.I know because I worked in the appliance section of one of those stores.Stop wasting your money.

Great value and water tastes great
Decided to try this version vs the GE priced option and was surprised how well it filters. Will definitely continue to use this going forward.

Just as good as the name brand
I've used the more expensive name brand and this works just as well. I can tell no difference in the taste of my water. Why wouldn't I spend less money for the same thing?

Just as good
Perfect replacement filter at less than half the cost. Just remember to purge the line for at least 30 seconds after install.

Same as the brand name for way less
The price is great. Same taste as the original ones. Meets the same specs and removes more than just taste. Great buy from amazon.

Great replacement, worked as noted
No noticeable difference in taste, but improvement in particulate coming through fridge water and ice (this might have been due to older filter being replaced) remains in glass as ice melts for example.Easy to install as on my fridge there is a fitting that does not require the water to be turned off, you can simply twist the old one out and new one on without issue. Beware that some air in the line might create coughing or spurts of water once replaced.I would highly recommend as an alternate to costly original replacements.
