DIY test kits are easily found, with the start of the new season being the best time to test. SOIL TYPES If you can remember your high school chemistry lessons then pH is measured on a scale from 0 14 with 7 being neutral. Anything lower than 7 is considered acidic, with 0 being the most. Transversely any reading over 7 is evidence that alkali is present.If your soil is acidic then adding garden lime can greatly improve its condition and thus increase the amount of nutrients absorbed by your plants.
