The Wusthof 5558 is the perfect kitchen shears to butterfly a chicken!
These Wusthof come-apart kitchen shears are perfect to butterfly a chicken! These shears are also a useful addition to your home improvement tool kit or as a home gardening tool. PROS: Shears open and close easily for cutting. They are not at all stiff to use! The blades are short (8 ins by 0.5 ins). This ensures good leverage for making precision cuts - whether it's deboning a chicken, cutting up veggies or even outdoors as a home gardening shears! Blades are made with high-carbon stainless steel so they stay sharp longer. One blade is serrated to prevent slippage during cutting and another is smooth to ensure a clean cut. Bone notch at end of kitchen shear blade easily cuts through chicken bones Blades meet together for smooth, precision cutting. When opened to the fullest, the blades come apart for easy cleaning. Rugged synthetic handles for either right or left handed users. These shears have steel-tooth insets in the handles to twist open bottle and jar caps. CONS: If you open the shears too far while cutting, the blades will come apart. However, to open the shears 'this far', you must be trying to cut a watermelon for the blades to come apart while in use! :) These are precision crafted shears proudly made by Wusthof knife making company of Germany. Wusthof is family owned for 7 generations and has been in the knife making business since 1813. If you are looking for a good quality pair of shears at a reasonable price, then these Wusthof Come-Apart Kitchen Shears are just the tool for your kitchen, home improvement tool kit or gardening shed! Love them!
I wish I had bought these sooner. I have had cheap kitchen shears that came with a knife set when I was young and broke. As the knives have worn out, I have replaced them with quality knives...but I never replaced the plastic handled kitchen shears. Just to have a "nice, complete set" and to get that ugly plastic thing out of my drawer, I ordered this set of shears. It is amazing. I didn't realize how easy I could cut items with "minimal" effort on my part. I am used to putting a lot of hand squeezing into the other shears to get them to cut cardboard, etc...but these cut tough things like they were butter. My hands are very weak, so they are especially helpful to me. If you have arthritis or weak hands, consider getting some quality shears like these. They do most of the work for you. I also used to put my other shears in the dishwasher, with the blades open, to try and get them clean...but with the pull apart design, I know that there will be no chicken germs hiding in a crack. The taking apart and putting back together of the shears is very simple. I would have expected to pay $50-$60 for these, so they are really worth the price they are sold for in my opinion. It's possible there are better ones out there, but I do know that these are good, they do what you need, and they won't make you go broke. Update (January 2012) My shears are stiff and not working well. There is a place on the blade that is wrong and the cut is hanging up on it. We are doing a major home remodel and there has been a lot of "construction work" (i.e. cutting wires, etc) and so I think it is a result of misuse, but no one is fessing up to using them on metal. Oh well, at the price they are, I'm buying a second pair and will put these in the tool chest. They work, but I have to push too hard to make them complete the cut...but it is not a fault of the scissors, but because they've been damaged.

Great product with great price
I have a pair of J.A. Henckels Twinshear Kitchen Shears that I use for everything, but the blades cannot be taken apart and the joint is hard to clean. So when I need another pair of shears for cutting up baby/toddler food, I decided to get another pair reserved specially for cooked food. This pair is really worth every single penny. The blades are very sharp, and the handling is great. One blade is serrated on the top, so food does not slip as easily. It fits perfectly in my hands (my hand is on the large side for females, but definitely smaller than an average male's). The best part is that it comes apart for cleaning very, very easily. I only need to open the blades all the way to 90 degrees and pull them apart. There is no knob or any other parts other than the blades, so there is no loose part to lose. The precise machining makes the shears feel sturdy when cutting - the blades do not shift around in other directions at all, unlike many other come-apart models - but they come apart (and go back together) in a snap. I highly recommend this product to anyone looking for a new pair of shears. I am even thinking of replacing my other pair, only if I can find a way to tell the two apart...

Sharp, easy to clean and durable! What more can you ask for? Oh yeah, comfort.
I bought these after going through 2 cheap kitchen shears you get at the asian market. These are very sharp and can cut through most food items you want. Just to give you an idea, I cut up lobster tails (albeit it was a bit of a struggle). The really nice thing about these is that they're really easy to clean since they come apart and you are left with 2 separate pieces. Plus I guess you can take it apart and use it as a knife if you're really desperate? And they're Wusthof, so you know it's high quality and they'll last a long time. One complaint I have is the comfort. The handles are kind of small for me, and I don't have big hands. They can be a little awkward to hold and cut things, and might even hurt your hands if you use it for a prolonged period of time. Aside from this complaint, I think these are great and I would still recommend it to someone looking for some high quality kitchen shears.

Wusthof beats Messermeister
I bought two shears, three years ago, that were highest rated in their price range; the Messermeister 8-1/2 inch which I used for raw chicken, and the Wusthof 5558-1 for cooked chicken. Granted, the Messermeister got heavier use esp cutting bones, and raw bones are harder than cooked. Both started out incredibly good, cutting bones easily. The Messermeister eventually loosened up, so that the two parts come apart a bit too easily, e.g. when dropped on the floor, and rarely even during normal use when opening the shears fairly wide. That can be pretty bad, raw chicken and blades flying around. The Wusthof, albeit used only for cooked chicken, is still running strong. Beside that, I found the Wusthof much easier to put together after each cleaning. For some reason, with the Messermeiser, putting them together was like a puzzle where I would always have to give it a couple tries before I got them in the correct orientation, whereas the Wusthof, with a virtually identical locking system, I always seem to get on my first try! Go figure. In any case, I would suggest buying two different-looking shears, and use one for raw, one for cooked chicken, and make one the Wusthof 5558-1. The handle is comfortable; it cleans well in the dishwasher; comes apart easily but only when wanted; looks like a good fit for all hands, large or small, that is to say whether you have larger hands like me or small hands it should be a good size; no left- / right-handed issues as I can see it.

A million and one uses
I love these kitchen shears -- so much so that I bought a second pair. These match the rest of my cutlery and fit perfectly in the knife block but more importantly I just can't do without them in the kitchen. I use them for cutting open bags of salad, fruit, frozen foods, etc. They are terrific for cutting up or trimming chicken, other meats, vegetables, etc. The handles are great for opening jars too. They separate easily and go through the dishwasher with no problems at all. Unlike some take apart scissors these are easy to reassemble but don't fall apart when you are using them. There is no end to the number of things I use them for in the kitchen. They are an absolute must have. That's why I got a second pair -- if one is in the dishwasher, I still have one to use.

Satisfactory in every way
I have been very pleased with these. Even tho they're technically "kitchen shears" rather than poultry shears, they will cut thru the backbone of a Cornish hen in order to split it, & will cut chicken at the joints. This is my 2nd pair since I kept finding they were useful for all sorts of things outside the kitchen: pruning, cutting garden hoses, trimming the edges of very thick, dense lawn turf (zoysia), etc. When they did get back to the kitchen, they were no less sharp - would still split a Cornish hen. So, the 1st pair now resides in the garage & the kitchen gets this new pair. Just checked & they cut fabric like a knife thru butter. Practically a multi-tool.

Scissors you can wash
We LOVE it! Especially for cutting meat and bacon and opening wet packages. It holds well but is easy to disassemble for washing and drying. Which is great because we have lost many kitchen shears to rust thanks to humidity and water accumulating in the joints

Cosa dire?
Straconsigliate!
