HAM-FISTED EXPLOITATION
I’m writing this review with only one purpose. To warn all Le Corbusier enthusiasts not to be mislead by Amazon’s extravagant description of the contents of this book. To those who might expect any book published by Prestel to be similar in quality to their many monographs covering the Blue Rider and Bauhaus periods (all printed in Germany).Because when one opens this thick heavy volume what one finds are hundreds of artificially tinted digital color photographs and an equally large number of wishy-washy (light gray) black and white photos of every extant building designed by the greatest architect of the 20th.Century.It’s immediately obvious most of these photographs have been digitally “manipulated”. In many cases to flatten-out Corb’s buildings’ three-dimensional qualities. Naturally one question arises. How could Prestel have allowed this tasteless assault on Le Corbusier’s remarkable legacy to be published under their nomenclature? The last page supplied the answer. This is a 100% Turkish production. A Turkish architect decides photography is an easier gig and sees the possibilities of cashing-in on the fame of Le Corbusier. To validate his “odyssee” requires recruiting 17 Turkish (?) intellectuals to write fulsome essays making occasional references to the subject of this book but mostly agreeing that Cemel Emden is close to reaching par with the genius whose name appears on this book’s front cover.I need only quote one sentence which encapsulates these ridiculous claims of parity between a Turkish non-entity and Le Corbusier. “Cemel, in his odyssey, chasing Corbu, has captured this instant in his own style, provoking reciprocity, inviting Corbu to meet him this time”.One could go on at length about the lousy quality of the photographs. An extraordinary number taken under gloomy cloudy skies - but I prefer not to dignify this type of exploitation with objective criticism. All one needs to repeat is that any lifelong admirer of Le Corbusier should avoid this book like the plague.
