What a story.
I have bought and read almost all of Catherine Cookson's books. This is the third time I've read this in over 30 years and the third time I've read it cover to cover in one go. It grips you from the start and you can't put it down. The Kindle wasn't invented in 1971 when I bought the book for 25p. It remains in my bookcase still. Old and worn.

Excellent
Such a well written book and absolutely gripping from start to finish. Hannah Massey is such an overpowering character who loves and hates with equal passion.

Good read
Very interesting characters and plot based on the intricacy of family life and northern and Irish Catholic values and how they can make or destroy the individual.

I'd forgotten just how much I used to enjoy the early Catherine Cookson novels. This was a good read.
