Yes, some people use it as a polishing compound and rub it by hand or with a tool.

Do I still use water?

Yes. Put your rocks in tumbler. Add 1.5 tbs of Step 4 grit per lb of rocks. Then put water in the barrel to cover the rocks. Keep the total contents of the barrel to about 2/3 full.

Is this pure aluminum oxide powder or are there additional elements mixed in?

Analysis shows over 99% aluminum oxide, along with traces of a few other compounds.

can this be used dry in a vibratory tumbler?

People use this tumbling media both in rotary and vibratory tumblers. We have only heard of using it with water so we're not positive about how to use it dry.
