Nature of the Beast
For the dry desert southwest, evaporative coolers, also called swamp coolers, are a simple and ingenious device for cooling your house. They are nothing more than a big box containing a fan and a water soaked pad. As hot dry air is drawn across the wet pad and into your house, evaporation causes rapid cooling of the air and it feels just as cold as air-conditioning, for a fraction of the cost. During the six weeks or so of late summer monsoon weather, the air becomes humid and the swamp cooler is useless. But for the rest of the hot season you will save hundreds of dollars off your cooling bill. In my area, the water is supplied by the Colorado River and deep wells. It's full of calcium and other minerals. The 8 inch thick cooler pads go in looking and weighing like corrugated cardboard, but after 3 to 5 years of use, they come out looking and feeling like concrete from all the minerals deposited on them by the evaporating water. At this point they need to be changed out. This is the third time I've had to change the pads in my coolers. This is also the third brand of cooler pads I have used and they ALL have the same slight odor for a few hours when new and first soaked with water. Smells to me like library glue from my school days. It's not all that bad and it's certainly not toxic. I suspect that the two users who gave such low ratings to these pads have never changed pads before. They'll just have to get over it, or of course there's always the option of using your air-conditioning instead, if it bothers you that much! These pads are just fine, no better and no worse than the pads I've used before. They do their job. Amazon also sells them at a better price then the local stores here in town!

Good value, quick delivery, odor not a problem
I am very pleased with this product. The odor reported by many reviewers was not a problem for me. The instructions suggested running the pump only for 24 hours and flushing the water from the cooler after this process. Yes, there was some odor for a day on so, but it was not objectionable. I flushed the water again and the odor was gone after a couple of days. My old pads did not look that bad, but the new pads absorbed water much better and cooled better. I highly recommend.

Perfect
These replaced our old brick 😂 ones perfectly. Made the cooler work like new, so much easier colder now. If you have a swamp cooler, you might want to change the pads.

stinky pads
I was very exited about replacing the pads on my cooler but now i dont know what to do with the smell it wont go away at first. I am very disappointed in this pads, perhaps the manufacturers could come up with a better gluing system than that. Be aware if you going to buy this pads be prepare to have a stinky house for several days, i hate them. However it only lasted 4 days of running the cooler with the windows and doors open and slowly the smell faded away. We're good to go now :-)

Should have replaced sooner.
This product replaced pads that had been in my cooler for about 5 years. I live in Tucson AZ and use evaporative cooling 4-5 months per year. Last year the cooler had difficulty keeping up with our cooling needs at about 100 to 102 degrees under low humidity conditions. With the new pads I am sure we will be able to use the cooler even in the 105+ range until the humidity rises and forces us to refrigerated air. Using evaporative cooling seems to save a significant amount of energy and raises the humidity inside the house making it more comfortable so the more we can use it the better. I recommend replacing pads sooner when cooling efficiency starts to drop off rather than waiting.
