WOW!
The Wacom Intuos Pro is a beautiful piece of highly functional tech!I use Vectric Aspire for design and toolpath creation for CNC wood carving. I don't know why it took me so long to think of it, but I have been working on designing knife handles for the CNC over the years and recently I saw a random post about "using your pen tablet to trace items in Aspire." A light went off in my head, "Hey! You could use that old Wacom Bamboo to trace those knives for the handles!" I dug out the old Bamboo, plugged it in, downloaded the latest drivers, and found out just how old my Bamboo was... purchased in 2008! I paused on setting up the Bamboo and decided to look into what Wacom was doing in 2026.Of course, even way back in 2008, there was a big difference between a Bamboo and an Intuos. The Intuos is Wacom's flagship unit. It has all the tech, all the bells and whistles, and all the customizability that the entry level models don't have or have but in a limited implementation.First, the new Intuos Pros are SUPER thin. I mean, my Apple iPad is pretty thin, and the Wacom is probably half as thick. On one hand it's awesome - it's lightweight and has a Bluetooth wireless option, so you're no longer stuck with using it wired to a device. The thin lightweight nature of the tablet makes it easy to transport and easy to hold, which makes it more functional and useful. On the other hand, I do feel like I'm going to break it. Dropping it is probably not a good idea. If you're going to carry it around a lot, I recommend some sort of a case.Functionality and customizability are off the chain. I'm using mine in a dual monitor setup. I have it setup so the tablet only controls one monitor at a time, and I set the 3rd button on the pen (and the center button on the right dial) to "Display Toggle" so I have a fast way to change which monitor the tablet is controlling. I did not like it when the tablet was set to cover both monitors. That's as far as I've made it with customization. Every button can be programmed to perform a function, including functions within apps. For example, you can customize a dial to change the size of the brush you currently have selected in Photoshop. At this point, I feel like my best bet is to start considering how I can use all the tools and features of the tablet in my daily workflow and customize the tablet as I go. It has immense potential, but you have to take the time to identify ways to put it to work for you, otherwise it's just an expensive writing/drawing surface. As for Vectric Aspire, it's perfect. I laid down a metal knife blade (carefully) on the tablet and used the freehand drawing tool with the tablet pen to trace the knife. The result was a perfect vector. For some reason it was really big, and I expected it to be a 1:1 representation of what was drawn on the tablet. I'll have to figure that part out, but even if I have to resize the vector manually, the tablet did the job I bought it for perfectly. Custom carved knife handles will be a breeze from here on out.The Bamboo was pretty small, with an even smaller active area. For my Intuos Pro, even though I wanted the biggest one they make, I decided on the Medium. I've gained a lot more active area as compared to the Bamboo, and it's large enough for every knife I currently want to trace, including some big machete handles. It fits well in my workspace, which is good because (at this point) I'm not using the tablet to replace my mouse. On my desktop, I wouldn't have room for the Large. If I do become proficient enough with the tablet to eliminate my mouse (or if I were to switch to a stationary mouse like a trackball) I would probably be interested in the large. The Medium was also the comfortable price point for me.I got mine on sale which made it an even better value for me. Now that I've used it for a few days and seen first-hand how far Wacom tablets have come since 2008, I would have been equally happy at the regular price.Add to cart. Go to cart. Checkout. You won't be disappointed with the tech. (Using it to its potential is up to you.)
