A very nice variable ND filter
So far, this ND filter is working well and doing a great job. The filter rotates smoothly and has markers on the edge to tell you how many stops of light you are cutting out (from 1-9). If you go past the 9 stop marker you will get a big X, but that's what happens with all variable ND's when you go to far. Sometimes the X is a good indication when looking through the viewfinder while rotating the filter. Neewer is going from strength to strength as a company and their quality shows that.

Neewer Basics 77mm Variable ND Filter
This product was sent to me for review as part of the Amazon Vine program. The following reflects my real-world experience using it. I requested it because I use a Canon EF 400mm L lens that has a 77mm thread, and I do a lot of my shooting outdoors, so an ND filter will come in handy. It is a good-quality piece with a robust, sleek and lightweight design that does not add too much bulk to a lens. The screw thread is machined correctly, ensuring smooth attachment and removal. The glass is clean and clear, leaving images free from any unwanted marks or other distortions. Controlling the ND strength is done with a dial that provides precise movement, making minute adjustments easy. I have taken my camera out on days with a lot of glare, and have noticed a visible difference when using the Neewer: my image becomes much sharper and less blown out. As far as I can see, there is no colour cast. In summary, a good value item.

Good quality, awesome range, but some IR pollution on cinema cameras
This ND filter is pretty good. I think for the price, it's very good, as you're getting a full 1 to 9 stops, which is a huge range from one filter, and it's so affordable. I get no noticeable drop in sharpness, so I think the optics are pretty good. However, on a camera such as my Blackmagic PYXIS, I get a fair bit of IR pollution beyond a few stops, especially towards the 9 stop range. This is to be expected, as the filter doesn't cut IR, and the camera doesn't either, so not a huge negative, but worth mentioning. There's however no noticeable colour cast, so it's just the IR issue, which again is only apparent with large amounts of ND. And there are ways to reduce this massively in post, so it's not a deal breaker. In terms of build quality, it seems good, with a smooth turn and visible stop marks written down so you know how much light you're cutting - great if you switch between slow-mo and normal speed where you need to know exactly how much light you're cutting or adding.

Great as Neewer stuff always is
I've had lots of Neewer stuff in the past and have always been happy with them: filters, video lights, selfie sticks etc... all fantastic value. This is no different. Straight out of the box it feels like a quality product, eventhough it's from their basics range. The filter screws on to lenses smoothly and rotates very smoothly to give the variable ND strengths. The numbers 1-9 are marked on the edge - presumably to denote 1-9 stops of ND filtration although these are not hard stops and you can find the exact level of ND you need for your situation. Going past 9 stops does shoe a little of the dreaded X pattern many people moan about with variable filters but to my knowledge, that is just a phenomenon inherent with all or at least most of these variable NDs and only occurs when you rotate the filter past number 9 which is essentially the intended limit of use of the filter. All you have to do to avoid it, is use it within the 1-9 scale. I cannot detect a colour cast by the filter though I must point out that I am colourblind so there may well be one, but it is just not obvious to me. It comes in a great hard plastic case as all Neewer filters do, together with a lens cloth. Very happy with this variable ND and whilst there are more expensive ones with higher grade glass and more fancy technology, for a hobbyist like me, this is perfectly capable. Good job again Neewer 👏

Silky Stops — Neewer’s 77mm Variable ND That Lets Light Behave
As a keen amateur rediscovering the pleasures of measured exposure, I’ve found the Neewer Basics 77mm Variable ND to be a remarkably capable companion: the slim, feather-light frame slips neatly onto any 77mm lens without introducing obvious vignetting and the rotatable design gives a smooth, continuous attenuation from ND2 up to ND400 — in practical terms that’s roughly 1 to 9 stops of light control — which means you can dial in everything from a barely perceptible softening to properly extended shutter speeds for dreamy water and streaking clouds. The construction feels confident rather than tacked together; the ring turns with enough resistance to avoid accidental shifts but without the gritty catch you sometimes get on cheaper variable glass, and the low-profile mount is particularly welcome on wide-angle setups where a chunky filter edge often intrudes. For landscape shooters wanting to stretch exposures in daylight, cityscape photographers choreographing traffic trails, or portraitists seeking to pair a very wide aperture with natural light without resorting to frantic high-speed sync, this filter does the heavy lifting neatly — in bright sun you can open right up to f/1.8 or f/2.8 and still achieve pleasing subject separation without the hassle of over-exposed highlights or relying excessively on flash. Colour integrity and fine detail have been excellent in my testing: any hue shift is minimal and entirely correctable in post if you prefer absolute neutrality, and micro-contrast holds up so your images retain texture rather than going dull. Compared with stacking multiple fixed ND plates, the variable approach is faster in the field and far less fiddly, although the usual caveat applies that extreme settings on some variable filters can introduce cross-polarisation artefacts on very wide lenses — I’ve not experienced troublesome banding with this unit on my 24–70mm, but it’s a note to bear in mind with ultra-wide optics. At the modest price point this represents very good value: you’re getting a thoughtfully executed filter that behaves predictably, endures regular use and genuinely expands creative options without feeling like a compromise. If you want to slow motion in-camera, keep control of exposure on bright days and avoid draining flashes with HSS, this Neewer variable ND is an economical, robust tool that punches well above its weight — highly recommend for anyone wanting to get dreamy, long-exposure looks without a wallet-shaped headache.

Good ND Filter
Good quality Variable ND Filter from Neewer made from good quality materials. I have been using this ND filter for just over a month on different 77mm lenses and so far I have had no issues. If you want to do long exposure photography or shoot on bright sunny days then ND filters is an essential accessory I normally have one in my camera bag just in case. Smooth and easy to rotate the filter for the different stops of light which is a must. Easy to attach the filter to lens and so far I have no issues with it screwing on to tightly when rotating the stops and then I can’t remove it which is a bonus. One thing to note when you have this attached to your lens it makes it slightly bigger than 77mm so your lens cap/cover will not fit so you will need to remover the ND filter when not using it. I have to admit I was a little concerned that it explains how to resolve phantom X if this occurs in the description and there is also a small sheet in the box explaining it also BUT so far I have not seen or had this issue and I have been going to the maximum a lot. Overall I am happy very the ND Filter and I feel it is a good price.

Impressive performance
I already have a couple of ND filters (the type with CPL built in also) so I was keen to try out a 'pure' ND filter and this has been great to use. I've not been in a situation where I truly need this yet but I've tested it out indoors with bright studio lights for videography. It enabled me to shoot wide open and maintain 180% shutter angle for video (which I always use). I noticed no vignetting or weird behaviour - it did what it said it would do with no issues. The filter is really thin and light, you barely notice it on the lens and it turns smoothly. The gap between the initial stops is quite large which is nice as it gives more control so you can darken a bit rather than have harsh stops. For more money you can get something which might perform better and have CPL included, but for less than £30 this is an impressive piece of kit which really is essential for videographers or photographers wanting to slow time a bit.

Really Good ND Filter!
I’ve been using this variable ND filter on my main lens for a few weeks and it’s been decent for the price. The range from light to fairly dark gives enough flexibility for most outdoor shooting, and the ring turns smoothly without feeling too loose. I haven’t noticed any major colour shifts, though at the darkest setting it can start to introduce a slight cross pattern if I’m not careful with the angle. The slim frame means no vignetting on my wide shots, and the coating really does help cut down on smudges. It’s not top-tier glass but for everyday use it’s held up well.

convenient replacement for a bunch of ND filters for DJI AC4
Bought this to pair with a lens filter adapter for the DJI Action Camera 4 to try and have a more convenient pack to carry around instead of the set smaller AC4 specific ND filters. It worked well with the filter adapter, and even with the rain and overcast day earlier, the VND filter looks to be working properly. I need the weather to brighten up more and see it in its proper environment. Very good for the price, to test a VND setup.
