Let director Masaaki Yuasa (The Tatami Galaxy) walk you through an eccentric, colourful journey of love, life and youthful exuberance unlike anything you’ve seen before.“Senpai” is a man smitten with his inscrutable junior, The Girl with Black Hair. Although he plans to woo her by engineering a series of “coincidental” encounters, he reckons without the exploratory nature of this girl as she roams through an abstract, bustling night in Kyoto. From pub crawls to festivals, book fairs to impromptu musical performances, the night is short and there’s much to take in - how can “Senpai” possibly grab the attention of the apple of his eye?Contains the film on Blu-Ray and DVD in Japanese with English subtitles. Tomodachi Punch!
Based on the novel "Yoru wa Mijikashi Aruke yo Otome" by Tomihiko Morimi and directed by Masaaki Yuasa ("Lu over the Wall", "Devilman Crybaby") this comedy is about the strange and event-filled night shared by Senpai and his unaware crush Kohai. It is set in the same universe as "The Tatami Galaxy" by the same creation team but you do not need to have seen that film in order to watch this one. Much of the story centers around four acts: drinking games, the used-book market, the school fair, and the viral cold. The original novel is told as four stories in four seasons combined into a single night for the film. The movie has a lot to say about youth, love, writing, friendship & connections, wisdom, and time. At the same time it is also about fun hijinks and incredible dialogue animated in a brilliantly-solid colored almost cartoony (but distinctly anime) art style that isn't afraid to go off-model. It changes from minimalistic outlines to giant set pieces to frame skipping movements in ways that compliment the emotion and happenings of this highly enjoyable story.I first saw the movie in theaters and liked it so much I saw it twice and immediately pre-ordered it as soon as it became available. I think a major reason the comedy works so well is the perfectly timed/scored music and sound editing/mixing. The film is unusual in that it has four acts whereas most movies these days are told in three acts. I discussed this with a friend who thought it felt long (even though it is 93 minutes) because he was expecting it to end after the third and didn't realize it until I pointed it out.You can watch this film with pre-teen audiences who don't mind reading subtitles (the film is not rated but recommended for 13+) but there might be two sticking points: 1) the large amount of drinking in the first act and only the first act 2) references to erotica. I don't think either of these are actually large issues because 1) even in Disney films like "Beauty and the Beast", "Pinocchio", and "The Great Mouse Detective" there is a plenty of drinking 2) they likely just won't understand the erotica much like the adult jokes in Disney films that the kids think are funny but for the wrong reasons.I highly recommend this film even if you have not seen a lot of anime.

Funny and Wonderfully Written Story with just enough touchs of exaggeration in the animation
I was on the fence since I normally do not find this style of animation interesting (do you know how many lupins i've missed?), but once I finished, I was glad I spent my no-rush credits on this movie.First, the story is wonderfully written. It has everything you would expect in a RomCom out of East Asia and more. For example, nobody told me I was going to get scores of Broadway musicals in the middle of the movie. Second, while I still did not enjoy the animation style, it did not get into the way of story-telling. The only part where I got a little bit confused was when the girl is on her way to visit the senpai, but I also think the confusion could be intentional given the physical status of the senpai at that time.I would give a warning for those choosing movies based on the age appropriation rating. There are scenes of erotic images front and center in this movie. I DO NOT KNOW HOW THIS IS APPROPRIATE FOR PG-13, even with the important areas blurred out. And no, the erotic images were of the traditional Japanese drawing style (think ukiyo-e) so it's different than the animation style and makes it memorable. There are 2 instances where these images are displayed full-screen in the movie.

Fantastic movie that quickly became one of my favorites.
I highly recommend watching this English dub version if you are a native English speaker, so you can take in every second of this movies beautiful animation and color. This movies exaggerated cartoony style is very unique and makes every single frame interesting without overloading the viewer.I've watched this movie twice now and honestly can't wait to do so again. I don't think I have seen a movie that better embodies the feeling and spirit of a truly wild night out that you look back on fondly for years to come. Especially at a time where going out and meeting new people and having new experiences isn't a thing we can do right now, this movie scratched an itch I didn't even realize I had. This movie doesn't even make me feel morose for missing out on doing these fun things the characters portray, but rather make me optimistic and excited for when I can do them again. If you like drinking, adventuring, or just a simple, fun story: this movie is for you!

Give yourself over to this film
I've been wanting to see this film ever since I saw its ill-starred - and distantly related - antecdent, "The Tatami Galaxy," some years ago. Many of the main characters, but especially this film's two main protagonists, are alumni of that particular TV anime from a few years ago.I won't drop too many spoilers, and you've been warned, I'm sure, that there is a great deal of drinking and dadaist humor sprinkled like a bad cold across a crowded singles bar.Suffice to say, it's a merry, mad romp through a very long night of booze, unrequited love, minor deities having fun, a migrant kotatsu and a harried guerrilla musical that are never at rest, a man with no underpants, an admittedly (to me, anyway) alluring crossdresser, and when all seems lost, a love redeemed in a way that will make you cheer. So, pour yourself a drink, and give yourself over to this film. Face it, it's not a coincidence. It's fate.

Pale shadow of the original anime
When I first watched NISWOG yes I was blown away for the first one third and thought I'd never seen such original and compelling anime. The second two thirds were not quite as good, as the story seemed to unravel somewhat, but still.. it was an amazing experience. So much so that I researched the thing and found that it was a follow on to Tatami Galaxy. Naturally I acquired TG, and so glad I did. TG beats NISWOG in every department in my opinion: graphics, music (opening, ending, incidental), characters, creativity in style, storyline.. you name it. The really big difference for me was that TG characters are much more subtly drawn and each conveys real personality, but are reduced somewhat to caricatures in NISWOG, contrary to the director's assertion that graphics have improved, in the 'making of' extra feature. The one exception to this superiority might be the extremely rapid delivery of some of the speech / subtitles in TG, so that to take it all in I had to watch the first time with one finger on the pause button of the remote. But I considered that a small price to pay. NISWOG is a movie, an hour and a half long or so, while TG is a series of 11 episodes each around 25 minutes long - so you get way more for your money with TG, along with better quality. As for those who say you can watch NISWOG without seeing TG first, well yes, you can.. in fact I did, but I came to learn that TG sets out the full story of life in Kyoto University while NISWOG seems more like a wild dream fantasy with little coherence to it unless you know TG first. As they say, NISWOG is good but the further upstream you swim, the sweeter the water.

The Night is Short, Walk on Girl
Really really great movie done by Masaaki Yuasa (director on Devilman Crybaby, Tatami Galaxy, Ping Pong: The Animation, Mind Game, and more), done in a beautiful, chaotic animation style similar to Tatami Galaxy, and shares a few characters from that series as well. The Night is Short, Walk on Girl is the story of two college students, who end up on a wild night out that involves Guerrilla Theater, Drinking Contests, "The Bedroom Investigation Committee", and a lot more bizarre characters. If you are looking for a light-hearted, entertaining & funny anime movie, this will absolutely fit the bill.
