I really enjoyed the book
I really enjoyed the book. It gives a vivid and realistic account of the daily life of Ella up to her vicious and cruel death.

Good book, but a bit unbalanced.
This is a very good book that touches on a lot of different facets of St. Elizabeth's life and the lives of her family and contemporaries. As a member of the LGBTQIA+ community, I was hapily surprised by the fact that some of her closest family were gay men (even if they did suffer under the stigma attached to that at the turn into the twentieth century), and this was neither glossed over nor ignored. However, there was a lot more time spent on St. Elizabeth's early life compared to her religious life. This is probably due to a lack of primary sources from that latter part of her life (both because of the humility of religious life and probable destruction by the Soviet revolutionaries). While understandible, I found the brevity of time spent on her religious life disappointing.All-in-all, though, a very informative and enjoyable read.

Would have like more information about her relationships with more members of the family.
Interesting information about the first part of her life, but somewhat sketchy about her last years. Not a lot of in depth discussion of her relationships with many other important members of the Romanov family.

Excellent biography.
Very well written. The author used the honest facts and stated what they did or did not prove.

May all the commuinist bolsheviks be burning in hell - now if they would throw Lenin's waxed covered body in a ditch I would be happy!

A must read about a forgotten woman at the center of pre WWI history.
Christopher Warwick is an extremely talented and dedicated biographer. The research that was done to bring this remarkable woman back to life was pain staking. No stone was left unturned in order to allow the reader to step back in time before the first World War to watch Ells grow from a Princess and favored grand-daughter of Queen Victoria; to her marriage to a Grand Duke and uncle of the last Tsar of Russia; to a widow who had given up all earthly belongings to create a religious order to care for the poorest and sickest of herr adopted country men and women. She bravely faced down the mercenaries that murdered her husband and harassed her as she continued to care for the lost and forgotten. I am so proud of the work that has gone into making the book more accessible to a wider variety of readers in time for the 150th anniversary of Ella's birth. The fact that she is now recognized throughout Europe as a Saint and Martyr will hopefully encourage readers to learn more about this remarkable woman who played a great role in history. Happy reading!

Excelente libro 💗
