Shankar (Shahrukh Khan) is a mute man, raised by the powerful Raja-Saab (Amrish Puri) who treats him like a slave. The elderly Raja-Saab wants to marry Gauri (Madhuri Dixit), a vivacious young girl. Gauri however wants to see a picture of her future husband first and Raja-Saab sends her one of Shankar. Gauri falls instantly in love with him and the wedding proceeds. However, after wards, she discovers that it's not Shankar, who she has married. She refuses to give Raja-Saab her body, so he imprisons and tortures her. When her brother Ashok (Mohnish Behl) comes to save her, Raja-Saab kills him. But before his death, Ashok makes Shankar promise him to save his sister; Shankar and Gauri flee. After a chase through the woods, Raja-Saab's men manage to capture the couple. Shankar gets almost mortally wounded, while Gauri is sold to a brothel. Shankar, however, gets saved by a mysterious healer in the mountains, who operates on his throat while he is still unconscious. The mysterious healer digs out coal from his throat which is how Shankar regains his voice again and manages to save Gauri. Then, he realizes Raja-Saab is in fact the rich man who came to his village one day and killed his parents. When the young Shankar tried to spread word of the looked-upon-as-an-angel Raja-Saab is in truth a murderer, Raja-Saab sneaks up from behind and shoves coal in his mouth, forcing him to swallow hence he becomes mute. Though when he was young he never saw Raja-Saab's face, he remembers the day clearly. And when it seems like deja-VI when he gets revenge for what they did to his love (Gauri) he realizes Raja-Saab and his two hence men are the culprits. He takes his revenge on three of them, but not after letting everyone know what they (pointedly: Raja-Saab) did to him when he was a child.After cunningly killing them all, he returns to his love.

Loved this film
Shah Rukh Khan is superb in this film. Madhuri Dixit is also wonderful. While a young boy, Shah Rukh Khan's character, Shankar, loses his parents because of a rich, greedy, controlling man who dominates the village. (Shankar doesn't find this out for a long time.) This evil man then adopts Shankar, but treats him as a slave. Shankar innocently serves this wicked man with loyalty and devotion, not realizing what a wicked man his master is. One day, the wicked man sees a beautiful girl (Madhuri Dixit) and wants to marry her. Once Madhuri Dixit arrives at the evil man's house, Shankar begins to recognize that his master is not a good man. Shankar (Shah Rukh Khan) is a hero in this film. With great difficulty, and overcoming seemingly impossible setbacks, he is able to rescue the girl. He also is able to conquer the evil man and other evil men associated with him. I love this film!!!

Great Classic movie :) I LOVE ShahRukh and Madhuri. Beautiful dance performances and a strong, emotionally gripping plot.

but that doesn't mean that this film doesn't deserve a good rating. In this early SRK outing
Okay, I admit to being a really hardcore Shah Rukh Khan fan. That's probably behind my rating of four stars, but that doesn't mean that this film doesn't deserve a good rating. In this early SRK outing, he is a mute with whom the beautiful daughter of the mansion (the incomparable Madhuri Dixit) falls in love. One thing leads to another and their love, of course, is thwarted so they run off together for a series of very Bollywood adventures. Always known for his amazing ability to express himself with just his facial features, SRK shows this off in aces in Kolya, making it really worthwhile for anyone, but especially the fledgling SRK fan, to see. Little tidbit--he has some interesting stunt work in this film (he does the majority of his own stunts) and the scene with the chandelier is particularly awesome, although it is one in which he was injured during filming. This is vintage young King of Bollywood stuff, well worth the view.

Great Movie / Badly burnt DVD
I really LOVED the movie when I finally watched it. I enjoyed the story line but not the miss match of the voice over. Lips moving with a delayed voices and sounds. DON'T order from "Rahul & I - Indian Music House"I'M TOTALLY BUMMED that when I went to return or replace I missed the return date. This movie will definitely be on "MY FAVORITE BOLLYWOOD MOVIE LIST" to watch! I only wish I got a better copy.Personal Rating:MOVIE: 5 STARDVD QUALITY: 1 STAR (only because 1st half was ok / no delayed voices)

Must Buy DVD !!
Excellent Picture quality with fabulous Sound effect.I had Moserbear edition but,I was not satisfied wid that disk quality.I must say this Eros product was much much better then my expectations.HQ pic quality gives a good impact in visual experience.Must buy,If,you liked this movie.

Also für Shah Rukh Fans die Hindi-(Action)-Filme mögen auf jeden Fall sehenswert. Ist mit wenig Tanzeinlagen. Ich persönlich mag den Film sehr, habe mir erst die englische Version zugelegt und dann die deutsche die -Gott sei dank - übersetzt wurde mit seiner normalen Syncro-Stimme. Rapid Eye Movies können das.

ce film est super quand on aime SRK on regarde même ses films en anglais et pourtant je ne le parle pas . J'ai pleurée avec lui regarder le et aimer et pleuré avec lui

There are currently youtube streams that have a higher video quality than this DVD. Not worth buying.
