From the Manufacturer In this fun and easy-to-learn unique game, players need to choose between moving their pieces or improving them. By giving players the freedom to design their pieces, Octi unleashes a new level of creative thinking. Created by Yale Professor Don Green, Octi is one of the greatest modern strategy games.

If you like abstract strategy games get Octi.
Octi is truly a wonderful game. I first learned about it several years ago and have played it along with chess as my two primary board games. Like all games that last the rules are simple but lead to a rich variety of strategies. The goal of the game is to capture the opponents three home squares. On each turn a player has the ability to move and capture like checkers pieces but only in directions where they have "prongs" (pieces which are stuck into each face of the octagon to denote the ability to move in that direction). Alternatively they can add a prong giving a piece a new direction of motion. Finally they can add a reserve piece to a home square bolstering their forces. On every move one must decide between moving and making your forces stronger. Move to soon and you will be rebuffed, too late and you will be overrun. If you can manage to build your forces while keeping the other person in retreat, you are sure to win. The simple version Octi, is a great introduction for children and parents alike and after several years the richness of Octi-X continues to amaze me. The most fun is to play with four people in teams of two, which opens a whole new social and strategic dimension to the game. There is also an online version at [...] which allows people to play against each other or the computer for practice. If you go often you are likely to have the opportunity to play with the creator.I highly recommend this game for years of fun.

Seems like it is easy but it is challenging says my 11 year old grandson. He really likes that there are different levels of play.

Interesting concept, but not an interesting game.
The game has a nice concept, but the rules seem incomplete. Before purchasing this I watched a video with an interview of the games author. In that interview the author stated the it was an endless board, meaning pieces could move off one board edge and land on the opposite side. Hover ever there is no mention of that in the rules. I cannot tell if that was an over site or the rule was removes. My son an I played it a few times but he does not seem interested.

Challenging with different levels of play
Octi is a great strategy game designed to have the players decide between building up directional abilities in their pieces, moving, and capturing.I love the fact that when you capture an opponent's piece, you gain their prongs for directional movement. The best part of the game is the different levels of play. We are a family will very young children up to teenagers. One side of the board is smaller and is used for beginner players. The other side of the board is more challenging for more skilled players.I have other Foxmind games with two sided boards. I love the fact that the company thinks outside of the box and gives you alternatives to game play!

Excellent game for spatial and strategic thinking
As a parent and educator, I highly recommend this game for children and adults. While the game board and pieces are straightforward to understand and use, the strategy possibilities are endless. Unlike checkers, you add prongs to your pieces to determine which direction you can move. You may add up to eight prongs (to fill the octagonal pod), allowing you to move in all directions. Every decision comes with a cost, however. Loading up one pod means that you have more freedom to move around the board, but then that pod is more vulnerable to attack! (Your opponent may capture the pod and all of the prongs in it.) My experience is that kids love this game (I do too!) and that they enjoy the strategy and decision-making that is involved. Octi is like a giant spatial logic puzzle. I like that it is simple to learn how to play, but the more you play the more complex it can get!

We love it!
Amazing game; great for younger and older kids as well as adults. Elegantand simple, yet clearly requires solid strategic thinking. Greatteaching game for kids, too. Also nice because there are variationsfrom simple to complex. The basic game has very few rules so you can learnin no more than a minute.

Excellent Strategy Game
Very good game. High levels of thought go into every move as the action ramps up. Playing against an equal opponent, we found winning or loosing almost always came down to the last two or three moves. I would put this up with the GIPF games as long time keepers.
