Weegee was among the first to fully realize the camera's unique power to capture split-second drama and exaggerated emotion. But his profound influence on other photographers, most famously on Diane Arbus, derives not only from his sensational subject matter and his use of the blinding, close-up flash, but also from his eagerness to photograph the city at all hours, at all levels: coffee shops at three in the morning, hot summer evenings in the tenements, debutante balls, parties in the street, lovers on park benches, the destitute and the lonely. No other photographer has better revealed the non-stop spectacle of life in New York City.Weegee's first book, Naked City (1945), was a runaway success and made him a celebrity who suddenly had assignments from Life and Vogue. By the publication of his second book, Weegee's People (1946), he had cut the wires to his police radio and had begun to photograph the furred and bejeweled grandes dames at the Metropolitan Opera as well as his beloved street people. Naked Hollywood (1953) and Weegee by Weegee (1961) feature portraits of Marilyn Monroe, Andy Warhol, John F. Kennedy, Nikita Khruschev, and Liberace -- many of them viewed through the distorted lens of his Weegee-scope.Regarded as some of the most powerful images of twentieth-century photography, Weegee's work now resides in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art. Review: Reprint edition (1985) is great book - After reading complaints about modern edition and poor quality I decided to bought a used reprinted edition from 1985. Quality is quite decent so I am very happy Reprint Edition ISBN-13: 978-0306802416, ISBN-10: 0306802414 Review: Astoundingly bad print quality - Avoid buying the Da Capo paperback. The print quality is like a cheap photocopier running out of toner. Even the text is badly printed; and what they did to the photos is a travesty. I remember the original edition of this book, and everything was like a high-quality glossy magazine. E.P. Dutton ought to be furious that they licensed the copyright to these cut-rate clowns.

SCAM: Avoid.
This is a very low quality, digital print on demand version of the book. Basically its a photocopy of a real book. DO NOT ORDER.

How they lived...and died
A fine selection of Weegee's unposed, spontaneous vignettes of life in the city, at least, as it was in the 30's and 40's, equivalent of today's TV "fuzz and the wuzz". His accompanying commentary, unghosted and punchy, mirrors the b/w images; snappy, to the point. The paper stock used here is cheap, but then, these photos usually appeared in the morning paper...in a time when there were newspapers.

Garbage Printing that Ruins All the Photos
The paperback is a garbage print-on-demand copy that washes out all the photos. Mine went straight into the garbage can. Complete rip-off, the publisher should be ashamed.

Reprint of historic photobook from the 40s
This is a small-format (non-coffee-table) book containing a representative selection of Weegees typical photos of New York tragedies (mostly) of the 20s, 30s and 40s, together with his own cryptic comments. Not to everyone's taste, but an iconic social document of the place and times.

Very poor quality
As others have mentioned, the photo quality in this book is awful. I wondered how bad it could really be when I saw the other Amazon reviews, and let's just say the reviewers were not exaggerating. I see that a hardcover is being reprinted in a few months--if you're dying to see some Weegee, it'd probably would be worth it check out his photos online until the hardback comes out, then cough up the extra dough.

UN LIBRO A DUE VELOCITA'
Weegee scrive come fotografa.

Putrid
Has all the printing quality of a xeroxed fanzine from 1978. Appalling reproduction of the photos. Avoid this one like the plague.
