Chanukah Lights

This book is just like all other Robert Sabuda books and is fantastic! We can't wait to give it to our daughter so she can read each of the 8 nights of Hanukkah with the whimsical and beautiful cutout scenes that pop right out at the readers!

This was a beautiful book. I know some may prefer more color, but that fact that the pop-ups were all white (I feel) make the reader focus more on the shapes, shadows, forms and details of the cut-outs. I especially found the wee clothing drying outside on the line amazing. The white color also highlights the colored foil menorah that's lit one by one throughout the story, so be sure to look for those in the windows in each scene. I probably looked through the book 4 or 5 times before I actually got around to reading the story. So no offense to Rosen - it's good, too, but in my opinion not as attention getting as Sabuda's work. This would make a great gift during Hanakkuh, and I can easily see the book becoming part of a yearly tradition to take it out only then to re-read and enjoy the illustrations among family.

I have to say that I have been collecting pop-up books since I was in high school - 40 years ago! I love them. My most favorite are by Robert Sabuda. He sets a high benchmark for excellence. This book did not disappoint. Some simple and some very elaborate pop-ups add to the story of the lighting of the chanuka candles. I found it an interesting (I am not Jewish, but love to learn about different cultures and religions) story and the pop-ups were a nice touch, highlighting key aspects. This is a book you might read to your younger children, who will delight in the surprise of the pop-ups, while letting older children discover it for themselves (after being instructed on how to carefully open and close the pop-ups to protect them from damage). It is a wonderful story of faith and miracles that those of any age would find inspiring.

What a beautiful book! I gave this as a gift, and my spouse was thoroughly delighted with it. The intricate fold-out parts are all rendered in bright white, making a beautiful contrast to the muted backgrounds. It tells a delightful story about how a message of freedom and peace spread around this world as Jews migrated far and wide. You don't have to be Jewish to appreciate this -- if you are open to the universal experience of people seeking their place in the world, this story should resonate with you.

Purchased last Chanukah when twins were a year old. Beautiful book with depth and a wonderful accounting of the holiday and our past. It has become a part of the celebration each year discovering more on each page as they grow and mature. A tradition that will be read holiday after holiday. Great gift!

This is a very beautiful book! I only wish the text was more geared towards a younger reader, since it is a pop-up book.

My family and I love this book.The story is lovely depicting a different scene in a different corner of the world for each night.The pop-ups are a marvel and an amazing work of art with lots of detail and imagination.My two children ages 5 and 8 loved it so much we read it every night of Chanukah.If you buy it, make sure to always put it in a safe place between readings.It is a very fragile book, not to be left alone in the hands of children ever!!
