Carino e divertente.

The Best Xbox One Game Yet
As I enjoyed Crazy Taxi and Ratchet and Clank years ago I thought I would give Sunset Overdrive a chance as I heard various comparisons being made. I'm glad I did! After Destiny, Battlefield, Titanfall and Assassins Creed IV this is my favourite Xbox One game; hands down. The city is huge and enemies fun, varied and challenging. I adore the art style: while not running at native 1080p, which is a mild disappointment, it looks amazing. Districts are varied in architecture and colour which keeps the game fresh. Particle effects fly everywhere and it runs smoothly; even when the screen is brimming with explosions and mutants. The best part is easily the movement, and while brand new, it feels natural and fluid. Animations are superb and the difficulty balance is executed well. There are plenty of movements (called traversals): wall running, grinding, bouncing, super bouncing, air dashing, flipping off bars and water running. While a couple of hours is needed to acclimatise, if you keep an open mind it’s easy to pick up. It also feeds you the different movements slowly so by the end of the game you are barely touching the ground. It's easy enough to stay alive and just get around, yet hard enough to make you feel awesome when you get your combo up or pull off a cool chain of traversals. The city is well crafted for the fast traversals as well, so much so I would voluntarily cross the entire (huge) map even though fast travel is present. There are plenty of bounce pads and rails that are easy to see but at the same time don't make you feel spoon fed. I cannot stress enough how amazing the movement is.Weapons are of the same vein. Some of them look completely ridiculous but using the right weapons in the right situation is rewarding. There is a wide variety, with powerful bowling ball launchers to the obligatory TNT teddy launcher. This is only a small part of the extensive customisation. Weapons can be equipped with ‘amps’ that give them fun and powerful bonuses. For example I equipped the AK-FU (the AK-47) with an amp that electrocuted enemies. This is really powerful against the agile, hard to track, ‘muggers’; it stops them moving and makes them easy to kill. Each weapon is leveled up individually and can be equipped with separate amps. This whole system is then dwarfed as you also equip hero amps, epic amps, melee amps e.t.c. Amps then link back into traversals as to power the various tiers you have to pull off acrobatic skills and keep a combo. By the time you add in the extensive badges, overcharge and trap customisation Sunset Overdrive is fully fledged. Again it sounds overwhelming but good pacing allows them to build slowly.Another area that has to be mentioned is the character customisation. Once everything is unlocked (and even near the start of the game) the customisation is beyond the call of duty. Wanna be a bearded lady wearing a unicorn hat, gas mask, chainmail and wield a foam sword? This is the game for you! Simply put, this is the most diverse customisation I’ve ever seen. I also appreciate the design choice not to shoehorn players into the ugly best class/setup.The plot is… interesting. If you read various reviews it’s like marmite; you either love it or hate it. While I can see how it could grate, I fall into the ‘love it’ category. The story characters are weird, unique and memorable. The humour? Crude, brash and slapstick. By no means is the story a masterpiece; it isn’t much coherent as a whole, but there is the sense it’s not meant to be. It tramples on the fourth wall and regularly questions it’s own plot and video game tropes in general. Somehow it just works though; it’s unfailing enthusiasm is contagious and I personally couldn’t get enough of it. As a side point; it is a 16 for a reason, but there are gore and vulgarity settings (removing the cartoon blood spattering and covering the swears with bleeps much like TV).The only real issue I found with Sunset overdrive was while there are a lot of side quests with unique voicing, mini storylines and even animations, I ran out of them after a couple of days. It’s a case of quality over quantity and I guess I prefer quality over (Assassins Creed style) quantity but for Overdrive 2 can I please have both? Apart from that I also didn’t much like Chaos Squad; I was hoping it would provide longevity but people end up spamming the hair spray bomb, covering the screen with explosions and unveiling the only technical issue in the game that is a drop in framerate (only for Chaos Squad mind you).Overall Sunset Overdrive is something unique. Sure; endless comparisons are made to Dead Rising, Ratchet and Clank, Tony Hawk, Crazy Taxi and Jet Set Radio, but Sunset Overdrive takes the best bits from each and mixes them into something truly spectacular, bold and polished. I enjoyed it thoroughly and look forward to the sequel!
