Zoopolis: A Political Theory of Animal Rights

This book was a required text for one of my political science courses. I thought the author discussed some thoughtful arguments on the topic of animal rights and citizenship. Though I do no agree with the author completely, this is a good text to review and it gave me some new perspectives on the treatment of animals, especially domesticated animals.

This book is an astounding new perspective on animal rights. It explains in clear, concise language why animals deserve not only negative rights (e.g. being free from harm and exploitation) but also positive rights (e.g. basic statuses of citizenship for domesticated animals). While not entirely convinced of their arguments regarding wild and liminal animals, this book genuinely changed my perspective on the status of domesticated animals and how we ought to treat them in a way that hasn't happened since I read Animal Liberation. This book is good for the quiet it's-my-choice vegan and the outspoken abolitionist alike. Highly recommended.

As someone who has studied animal rights for over 5 years now, this book was very new, thought provoking and took the discussion beyond where other animal rights books go. Great for already vegans to read, spends less time arguing that animals should be free from our infliction of violence and more time exploring more complexed ideas like what the nature of their rights should be, how would we navigate pets, wild animals etc. Even just the introduction has many lines that I won't forget, very well written.

This is the most comprehensive and compelling case for animal rights I have read. Unusually, it deals with wild, as well as domestic animals.

Un libro muy bien escrito y con unos argumentos muy válidos. Voy or la mitad y me encanta. Exponen todas las opiniones y puntos de vista y en base a eso presentan su teoría que es totalmente realista. Espero que un día el mundo esté preparado para implementarla.

für Philosophen/Innen, die über Tierethik hinaus was lernen wollen und für Politikwissenschaftler/Innen, die sich endlich an das Thema Tierrechte rantrauen, das perfekte Buch! Inhaltlich sehr schlüssig geschrieben und mal ein ganz neuer Ansatz Tierrechte zu betrachten! Aber auch für politisch interessierte Menschen ist dieses Buch das Richtige!Das einzige was ich negativ kritisieren würde, ist das Bild auf dem Cover des Buches, das nicht zum Inhalt des Buches passt. Schließlich will das Buch, nichtmenschlichen Tieren zu Bürgern/innen machen, da passt das Bild in der Küche nun gar nicht rein, denn bereits heute sind manche Spezien Teil der Familie, das wäre somit nichts Neues.

Un libro bellissimo, intelligente, di grande ispirazione, che non si nasconde le difficoltà di un percorso politico che tenga insieme umani e animali, e prova a far fare un passo avanti praticabile alle lotte per i diritti degli animali immaginando i doveri positivi nei loro confronti che possiamo - da subito e attraverso le istituzioni, le leggi, le pratiche - mettere in campo.
