Great true story.
I read this book about 15 years ago. If you like to read about Indians I would suggest this to read. I purchased this for a friend.

Impressed with the Chief and the way the author strives for accuracy.
I am only 30 pages into the book and I am impressed by the Chief and the author. I am an avid reader of the western frontier life which include any true account from Spanish explorers to modern ranching. One thing stands out is how the authors keeps the book as an interview and writes the accounts just as the Chief tells him, then adds explanations for the terms, cultural and social view points from his research. I have read several books that have referenced Plenty coups in their accounts of events during the Indian Wars and all have noted his bravery and leadership..... now I feel as if I am sitting next to him under the shade tree as he talks about those event.

A great American story
I have read few books more than once. This one I have read twice and will read again. Chief Plenty-Coups' life is both inspiring and sad as he leads his people from the their old ways and into the white mans world. Linderman has done an excellent job in bringing the reader into Plenty-Coups life as he relives his youth and becomes the last Chief of Chief's of the Crow nation. As I sit here and write this review images of the many exploits of Plenty-Coups and his tribe, as told by the chief, come to mind. I really became engrossed in his story and did not want it to end.

Learning about the Crow Tribe
It is great reading about this famous man of the Crow tribe. Because of the relationship of the Plains Indians it is good to read as much as I can find about all of them to get the best picture of what their lives were really like from as much of their own perspective as possible. Many should be reading as much as possible to keep perspectives open and growing. Thanks for having these books available. Of course, one always has to consider the authors, politics of the "day, and hidden agendas. All of that plays a part in how we view the past, and all we can do is make an effort to sift through all the stories. I must admit to being alarmed that the book by Erdoes and John Fire Lame Deer now has a disclaimer in the latest addition that the work is "fictional." What is going on here??? Something to ponder.

Collector's Must-Have...
Oh yeah, ya gotta get this one...This is a rare gem and a good one at that as this is as close as we can get to having the Chief write a book himself. It is also very rare to have a Native who has pictures of himself taken throughout his life, a very special treat indeed.I found myself looking at his pictures frequently as he does not look remarkably big & fierce, yet accomplishes incredible deeds. Almost like a Brad Pitt movie, you almost want him to get whacked just once, because he's just "too good"!But he is the real deal...and to think that there were thousands of men like him throughout this country's early history. What a shame...

Living with the Crow these last five years - married into the tribe, I have heard so many stories of healing and the little people.Plenty Coups has always been my favorite chief because through the help of his visions the Crow have maintained and thrive to this day! Because of his foresight my Crow son has the Big Horns and the Pryor unmolested to wander!

Interesting and worth the read
Plenty Coups: Chief of the Crow Indians, by Frank B. Linderman The interviewer starts off slow and mostly talking about himself. But he finally lets the old Indian speak and it's pretty good, and sometimes better, from there. I do wonder if it wasn't "helped" by the U.S. government in an effort to clean some of the stinky mud off itself re: the dealings with the Native Americans. But it's a good read anyway.
