Great buy
Does exactly what I need for a very fair price. I bought an external mic & phone recorder & all work perfectly. Downloads to my Mac a breeze. No software needed. So glad I didn't buy a $200 model, no need!

Aunt loves it
Aunt loves it! She is going to give all the family history via digital voice diary. She is one of the oldest two living relatives from the old country. Can't wait to hear what she says when no one is listening! Rise of the machines!!!!!!!!!!!

This devise is NOT intuitive to operate
This device comes with a "Quick Start Guide" that was too cryptic to be useful. The buttons are not at all intuitive so I downloaded the full manual. Even with that (not well written) I still couldn't operate it well so I took it to my 20-something year old daughter because kids seem to be able to work gadgets so easily. She couldn't figure it out and confirmed it was not intuitive. When I decided to return it, I wanted to delete the files that somehow I managed to record so I took it to my son who is a senior in college as a Mechanical Engineer. He couldn't figure it out easily so is keeping it overnight to figure it out. As soon as I get it back from my son, I'm sending it back. Huge waste of time.

Philips DVT1100 review
I've purchased Philips digital voice recorders previously but this one is definitely a low end recorder. This recorder isn't as easy to use as my previous recorder but after consulting the online manual I was able to figure it out. As far as the recording goes its on par with the other Philips recorder that I used as well as similar low end recorders from other manufacturers. Don't expect professional quality recording from this device, it wasn't designed for that. It does use replaceable batteries which is nice but that also makes the recorder thicker than the internal battery type. For the price which was fairly low it was worth purchasing.

An unintuitive recorder with other faults, go elsewhere!
I use a small olympus recorder for keeping exposure notes on film cameras I own. As my collection grew I needed another recorder so thought I would try this one as I liked the big screen and controls. However I find it is far inferior to the vn-702 Olympus. For one thing, it is extremely unintuitive, you will have to read the manual which of course must be downloaded as the quick start guide is as useless as the recorder.Lets compare the simple task of deleting a file or folder.Olympus - you hit the erase button and the screen gives you the choice of deleting "one file" or "folder". You select with the OK button and go from there. One more verify screen, hit the OK.The Phillips - you hit and HOLD the trash can button and at the bottom of the screen you get "dELONE" - what the crap is that?? Well reading the manual if you then hit the fast forward button you see "dELALL" No that is not dELONE's brother, that stands for delete one file or delete all. So what you get on one screen in clear english on the Olympus is on two screens in code on the Phillips - and without the manual good luck trying to figure out the dELALL is even a choice let alone how to find it. OK, now how do I delete dELALL? Well dEALL don't stay around long so you need to hit RECORD to get rid of him fast. Yeah hitting record to delete makes sense don't it? By the way you had better hit record and let off fast or guess what - you will record!!!Now lets change folders on the Philips. Its intuitive!!! Yes all you do is hit the folder button. However you must be patient as there is considerable delay, enough that you think your button press did nothing so you press it again. Then you skip 2 folders.Good points - has a nice strong speaker so when I play back my exposure notes I have no problem hearing them. Thats it. Buy an Olympus or maybe a Sony.
