Does not smell that bad. Good blanket.
When I read the reviews, I was expecting to open the package, take a whiff, and return it. I was ready! Yet, when I opened the package, I was pleasantly surprised. Yes, if you put your nose to the fabric there is a chemical smell. But, IMHO, it is not overpowering. The blanket itself is nice and long, heavy, but a weight that is easily carried and stowed. This is a versatile item and well worth the money. One thing to note is the it is 70% wool and 30% synthetic.

Highly recommend
Well if I had known these blankets were this nice I would have bought all of them. The price is good for such a heavy blanket. The texture is coarse but, still soft and not scratchy. There is a little bit of smell but it's going away under the ceiling fan. I never wash my wool blankets, don't need to really, they never leave the house. Wish they had a red one.

Better Than Expected
Wool blankets have a natural odor and this one is no exception. Maybe I overprepared for an overpowering and repulsive odor, but it wasn't horrific or even unpleasant to me. However, after washing it in cold water on the gentle cycle and drying it on low heat as directed on the packaging, the odor dissipated significantly. Some of the wool blanket reviews on Amazon swear there is a overpowering petroleum smell because of moth-proofing or fire-proofing, but this is the natural odor you smell. The manufacturer states that no chemicals were added to the blanket.Another problem people noted with cheaper wool blankets was the high amount of shedding. I washed the blanket normally in my regular household top-loading washer and dried it in my regular household dryer with two tennis balls to help fluff it up. The shedding was minimal - about a handful of fiber. (Please see pictures.) I was worried it would be too complicated to wash and dry the blanket, based on some other reviews suggesting cleaning strategies, but it was really convenient to pop it in the washer and dryer and not have to take it to the dry cleaners or laundromat or have to hang it dry. Finally, I was worried about the stiffness and roughness of a wool blanket as well but once washed and dried, the blanket was soft and snuggly warm. I have it against bare skin on my legs right now and I don't feel itchy.I wasn't sure that I would get anything of good quality at this price, but I was pleasantly surprised. I was going to keep this blanket in the car for picnics, outdoor events, and emergencies, but I liked it so much it's on my bed right now.I don't know how warm this medium weight blanket would keep you if the temperature dropped below freezing but it sure would help under your sleeping bag, on top of your lap at an outdoor concert, or over your shoulders at a football game. The greatest testament to this blanket's quality is that my feet are always cold and right now I'm under the fan with just the blanket on and my feet are not cold.I haven't tested its waterproof or fire-resistant properties, so I'm not sure about that but most wool blankets claim to be waterproof and fire-resistant down to 50% wool. This blanket is 70% wool, so it seems like it might perform as claimed. The only reason I took off a star for durability is because there were several pulls in the fabric after I washed it and it seemed a little lighter when I picked it up.Comfort is a high 4 stars because it's still not plush heirloom quality wool but I could sleep with it directly against my skin without it bothering me.Overall, I recommend this blanket and will probably buy more for my kids because of the quality, ease of care, and affordable price.

Great cost for quality.
I'm really pleased with these. They arrived quickly and are very heavy with a stitched edge. I'm using these for guests at a winter wedding. Yes, they have a smell, they will need to be aired out. These will be great to keep warm and have people take home as favors with the wedding logo embroidered. For this price I didn't expect something that was the quality to be on a bed or couch which they aren't. They are a heavy yet not stiff wool, great for outdoors. I would highly recommend.

Smell like petroleum
1-13-2025 Updating this so people are aware of the flaws....I use this blanket in an area in which I made for feral cats I take care of so it gets washed often. I have washed this blanket at least 14 times if not more. It still smells of petroleum and it still sheds mass amounts of fibers. So much so that if I do a wash after washing this without putting my washer through a sanitation cycle that the next two loads will have fibers and smell as well. When drying said blanket my lint filter is so filled that just taking it out causes some to pull off. NEVER have I ever experienced such lack of workmanship in any fabric I have worked with in the 50 years I have been doing wash, smh! When I received this I had already noted that some reviews stated it smelt; some said like mold other said like petroleum....I figured how bad can it be only because I was going to wash it before placing it in my pet areas. Boy was I ever wrong. The smell was over bearing when removing it from the packaging yet I proceeded to the washing machine. Again, another mistake on my part because after two washes it still smelt, not as bad as it started out with yet still very strong. * Added annoyance, it made a totaled out mess of my washer with all the fibers that came off of it both time. So much so that my front load washer drain ports by the door where completely covered with a mass of said fibers.* Moving on to the dryer....after the first drying my lift fliter was completely covered in fibers to the point I most like could of worn a nice hanky out of it and it still smelt yet said smell was more like a mold. Because I have many many things to kill odors I turned to one of them, completely sprayed the blanket, let it set for a bit then dried it again....more lint mess like the start of this all so much so that I opened up my lint compartment to do a through cleaning due to all of this.... when it came out of the dryer it was a lot better yet my pets are still staying clear of it most likely because to them it is much more potent still. I have it out in the open air in hopes that the smell will finally dissipate yet only time will tell that, smh.YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!

Still wool, but hopefully you knew that when you bought it.Slight new wool smell when opened, but wash and dry and it's gone.

Fits great
Yes there is a slight smell. I live in North East so put outside to air out. Still smells but the smell of wool. This fits my full bed perfect. Really warm. What I like best about it, is that it stays put.Does not roll up or down or fall off.Really like this really warm blanket.
