I should preface by saying I am not an amateur radio operator myself, this was a gift for my wife who is and plans on using this radio for RACES and ARES work. She set up the radio in the house with a 12V power supply and was operating, believe it or not, with a mag-mount mobile antenna on a cookie sheet, and after digging through the manual was immediately making contacts and hitting area repeaters. the radio is obviously very well constructed. There is nothing cheap or shabby about this piece of equipment. It is extremely solid and well made. The body of the radio is dominated by a massive heat sink. The fit and finish is flawless. The controls are easy to grasp and operate, important in a mobile unit. Sound qualiuty from the built in speaker is excellent and it can pump out enough volume to deal with a noisy mobile environment. As for operation, it's a Yaesu, and every piece of Yaesu equipment she's owned has been excellent, and this radio is no excpeption. It does everything Yaesu claims it will, and does them well. It is early days yet, she's only been using it a few days, but so far she is very satisfied with it. The only real drawback is a fault shared by all modern 2 Meter transcievers, an overhwhelming number of functions and options. It is going to require careful reading of the owners manual to be able to fully use this radio (or, to be fair, any modern 2M rig). Learning the basic operation is not hard at all, but you are going to need to keep the manual handy for anything else. One of the first things I'm going to do is make photocopies of the essential operations pages from the manual so she can keep a copy in her vehicle. Overall, it's a very nice radio, works well, and I would recommend it to others looking for a solid 2 Meter mobile transciever.

This radio is very compact for all the bells and whistles it has. I believe it is a very good first radio and has many possibilities for future work with the computer. It was easier for me to manually program by downloading the manual from Yaesu web site so I could view it larger on my computer. I have ordered the software and cable for future programming and hope to get it soon. My experience so far has been good. I would recommend shopping around for price and April is month for a good rebate.

I purchased 2 units, 1 through Amazon and 1 through Ham Radio Online. I would give this radio 5 stars if it weren't for the fact that BOTH units do NOT have an output power of 75 watts in the high setting "B0101". 1 unit only put out 53 watts and the other puts out 60 watts...hardly 75 watts!!! Don't BS the customer Yaesu, some of us DO check the power output of our rigs as we work towards tuning the whole system from the aback to the antenna tip! If Yaesu support does not provide a resolution, then these will go back and I'll purchase a Kenwood. Yeah, same wattage as these current Yaesu's, but at least I'm getting what I'm told I'm purchasing SMH!

...This is my first purchase of a HAM radio! Honestly I didn't know what I was purchasing. I'll admit I bought it because of the $price$!! The Radio: It is heavy in weight and feels and looks like quality. The radio chassis is built like a tank ...fit and finish is very clean....over all...Heavy Duty for sure!! It is a mono band 2 meter only transceiver! Don't let that deter you from the purchase. Go on line and down load the operators manual.....this radio has features that rigs 3X the price do not have. If you are just starting out and want to be kept busy/learn...???...check out the operating features in the owners manual. For a 2 meter Transceiver is Freekin Amazing! You have a lot to explore/work....If you are new..?..You won't master this unit for months!! NEXT ...in my opinion... next you put your $ towards real good cable and a quality antenna that will fit you needs and use! Don't cheap out on cable or your antenna. I am using my Yaesu FT-2900R as a base station powered by a TEKPower TP30 DC supply. The radio transmission line is connected to a MPD Marine RG8x jumper cable, to a Daiwa CN-103 Bench SWR/Power meter, MPD jumper cable to, Jetstream JTCS4M 4 position Coax switch, (4) Long run MPD RG8x (50 ft) MPD cables, (1) to a Arrow OSJ-146/440 J-Pole, (1) to a Browning BR-6070 Base antenna, (1) to a Firestik 2MCKB 4ft base and my super favorite (1) to a Arrow 4 element 2 meter Yagi mounted on a CHM 3000/9521 Channel Master Rotator, mast and a Signature 2ft. tripod. That's my Rig!! Yeeeehaaa!!! I point that baby east and I'm across the pond!!! :) I love that Yagi!!!! You'll find that cell phones maybe cheaper but there is nothing like being a HAM!!!
