Elements of Woodcarving Paperback – August 1, 2000

This is a great book by truly a master carver. It is filled with amazing examples of what he has done. There is a shirt having from a hanger that I would swear was real. It truly inspires me to try my hand at carving.The book starts with information on choosing woods and tools. It goes on to talk a little about technique and then goes on to describe his projects. The book is really organized around his projects. There are excellent pictures showing every step of the carving process from bare block to finished masterpiece. I have used this book to create my own projects using the steps he describes to make my own carvings that have no resemblance to his.This is a great book to take what he does and make it your own. The pictorial nature allows me to do just that.

This is a book to inspire a beginning carver, but it does not contain enough detail to complete a project . For the intermediate and advanced carver, however, it is a treasure trove of wonderful projects, complete with sufficient detail to complete them. Chris Pye's books are an inspiration to all woodcarvers searching for fresh ideas and an expanded variety of carving subjects. I would recommend this book as a wonderful addition to any woodcarver's library.

chris pye is likely one of the best carvers alive. add to that his ability to teach, write, and illustrate and you have a person whose books are likely the best ever written on the subject of woodcarving. you will not be disappointed.

The photography was super and the text is very readable and full of informationregarding this period of carving. All should be utilized and carried forward.

An excellent reference book. Plenty of projects to choose with very explicit techniques.

Clear and simple explanation, great color images easy to read. Good for any level of Carver explains why each step and tool is used.
