This book deals with the process of choosing and using a milling machine and its accessories. In addition to the machine itself, the accessories include the cutters, cutter chucks, workpiece clamps, vices, angle plates, dividing heads, rotary tables, boring heads and other minor items. The content is divided into three main sections. Firstly, it describes what machines and accessories are available and covering each one in detail. The author explains which are essential and which can be obtained when the workshop activity eventually demands one. There are also suggestions on how the equipment chosen should be installed. The usage of each machine and accessory is covered for all but their most complex uses. Typically, using the rotary table and the dividing head are both described to a detail sufficient for the majority of uses that will surface in the home workshop. The third section deals with the actual machining process, covering the choice of the cutter for the task in hand, the speeds to use and how the direction of the feed relative to the cutter rotation is vitally important. A less-understood feature of milling, back cutting, is also explained. Review: A great and helpful book - This book is a superb reference for anyone considering a table-top or small floor model milling machine for hobby or light commercial use (ie: gunsmithing). The author is British, so the writing style is different from us Yanks, but his recommendations and considerations for a mill and its tooling are solid. Flow of topics is smooth. The author is great at offering money saving recommendations especially in the area of clamps, specialized tooling and vices. I'd recommend this book to anyone who is considering a mill and especially tooling purchases. Review: Good for the hobby - This book does what this series is intended for. It answers many questions the hobbyist has, in a format that is easy to follow and understand. So if you have a home shop and are considering buying, or already have a mill or a mill/drill,I highly recomend this for your library.

Milling machine for the beginner
Seems to be a good basic book for getting started with the milling machine. I recently purchased a small, benchtop milling machine and have no experience using it, so this book was a big help setting it up, getting the right accessories and using it.

All these little Workshop Practice Series books are good.
Mostly about fixturing, which is at least half the challenge of using a milling machine.

A rip off
Do not buy this book **if** you already own "The Milling Machine for Home Machinists" by the same author. Despite different titles, different publishers and different covers is EXACTLY the same as this book. Chapter by chapter. Word for word. Picture by picture. Amazon has seen fit allow different text descriptions of each implying the content is different. It is not. I feel badly abused by both the author and Amazon.

..jeden Cent wert ...

Helpful briefing
I was toying with the idea of getting a vertical milling machine, so I bought this book to see if was really as complicated as I thought. It turns out that all together it is, but that with everything explained clearly and approachably, it was worth having a go. i have now bought the machine; the next step is to accumulate all the other bits like collets and cutters to make it work, which would have been a very hit or miss process without this book. I feel that with this book it will be quite reasonably straightforward; I'd recommend it to anyone else in my position with no access to an evening class and a wish to mill metal. One thing that perhaps should be emphasised; Harold Hall has also produced another milling book in this series which takes the form of a description of all the bits of equipment you need to do milling adequately. It's called 'The Milling Machine - choosing and using' and it is equally helpful and valuable; both books together would be my recommendation - they're so CHEAP! Fantastic value.

A must have for home shop milling operators
One of my favourite home shop books. Written like a course text with several useful projects for the beginning milling machine owner, with drawings and operational instructions to make a great foundation to a new shop owner

Auch für einen Leihen gut verständlich.
Die Bücher aus der Reihe sind sehr informativ und für den Leien gut verständlich. The books in the series are very informative and easy to understand for the layman.
