Excellent sharpening stone
If you're new to whetstones, the first thing you should know is that this is not a quick and easy way to sharpen a knife. It will take you at least 20 minutes to get a good edge, and it takes a bit of learning to get the technique right. Fortunately, there are lots of good web resources (i.e., YouTubes) showing how it should be done. One really good one is called "How to Sharpen a Knife on a Wet [sic] Stone - How to Get an Extremely Sharp Knife." It's a good thing that there are web resources on this, since my stone came without instructions. (You will find the manufacturer's instructions posted on the Amazon listing, however.) I assume this was an oversight that the manufacturer will soon correct. The keys to a good sharpening job are: soaking the stone in water for a long enough period to get it really saturated, keeping the surface wet while you're working, keeping the angle of the blade shallow (about 10 degrees), and using the right amount of pressure (more when you're pulling the blade toward you, less while pushing it away from you. There are 2 sides to this stone: coarse (1000 grit) and fine (4000 grit). Some stones come with even finer grits (8000 or even 10000), but the 4000 seemed fine enough for me to get a really sharp edge. The surface of the coarse side seems to wear away pretty easily (although I doubt that will have a serious impact on longevity), but not so the fine side. You'll need to use the coarse side first if your blade is really dull, but you can probably get away with just the fine side if you're merely touching up a fairly sharp blade. This one comes with a silicone rubber base that helps to prevent the stone from sliding in use. It appears to be solid and well made, and looks to be a very good value. (Just compare its cost versus other stones that Amazon lists.) If you're willing to put in the effort, this stone will reward you with a really sharp edge. (Non-serrated blades only, of course.) Highly recommended. Full disclosure: I received a complimentary copy in exchange for my honest and unbiased review.

Directions for Care & Use please!
Upate: Since my review yesterday (below), Ann from BearMoo kindly sent instructions for use. Thank you! And so I've updated my rating to 5-stars. Great product! This was the first Whetstone that I've ever purchased. After reviewing several 'how-to' videos, I jumped right in to use it. I found the process nearly meditative and the BearMoo stone extremely effective! The first knife I sharpened was very dull with small, jagged edges. The 1000 grit side effectively removed the jagged indentations and created a nice cutting edge. The 4000 grit side made the knife razor sharp. The process took nearly 40-minutes. My only complaint is that there was no literature with the Whetstone describing the proper use of the product...no description of the product...no directions on use...no care & handling...no 'best practices'...no first steps...zip, zero, nada. Some of the videos I watched suggested soaking the stone for 12-15 minutes prior to use. One suggested using vegetable oil on the surface versus water/soaking (I used water and presoaking it for 15-minutes). So instead of a simple 'out-of-the-box-and-use' approach, it required a bit of research before sharpening a knife. Otherwise I would have given this product a 5-star rating.

A decent enough stone for a beginner, and worth the money
Disclaimer: I am an absolute beginner when it comes to whetstone sharpening, and this was my first foray into the craft. I am in no way qualified to give a reliable objective review. This is just my impression from using it a few times so far. As far as I can tell, this is a decent whetstone to get started and learn the basics of sharpening. I noticed as I was sharpening that a lot of the stone as well as the metal was coming away with the water. Whether this is just the way whetstones are as compared to oil stones, or this is a particularly fragile stone, I don't know. But it seems like you need to be fairly careful to wear the stone away evenly, or you'll be doing a lot of flattening. This isn't very important to me, since I only plan to use it now and then and will probably upgrade when needed. Overall, it's decent. It's hard to mess up a square hunk of stone. The grippy holder works great and I'm definitely stealing it to use on my oil stone when this one is through. Thumbs up.

Easy to use, durable, quality stone
I waited a while before writing this review in order to get some use out of the product first. I am not a "professional" knife sharpener. (Is that even a thing?) I just sharpen the kitchen knives (well, and pocket knives, too) at home...and, most recently, I've started taking knife sharpening equipment with me when we go to rental cabins, because their knives are DULL. The stones (actually, I have several, two-sided, of various grits) are very easy to use, and hold up well. By "hold up well", I mean that some stones, after a lot of use, wear away and become uneven/scooped out in the center. So far, I haven't experienced that with mine. They put a very keen edge on the knives. In fact, if you put a little effort in, they can become scalpel sharp. One thing these stones have taught me is that I need better kitchen knives. :-)

Knives seem to glide instead of cut!
I really liked this whetstone! I had a Smith's pocket sharpener that could get my knife sharp enough for working around in the yard (I have an Opinel no.8). However, in doing a little research I found that the sharpener was only around 600 grit on the finest setting. So this BearMoo 1000/4000 grit looked like the perfect step up, and it turned out to be the perfect stone for me. The pictures are an accurate representation of what you get. The removable rubber base was helpful when switching from one side to the next, and it kept the stone from sliding around. The instructions say that the stone can work with either water or oil, but that water is preferred. It said to leave the stone soaking in water for five minutes, and the stone worked like a champ. I especially liked how the instructions gave you an approximate time of how long the stone takes to sharpen a knife -- it just helped give me an idea that it would take about 15-20 minutes on the 1000 grit side, and then another 10-15 minutes on the 4000 grit. Just turn on a TV show! One thing about this stone is that it is very "thirsty." I had a cup of water close by just to add a little water periodically when it felt like it was scraping a little too aggressively. Also, be sure to do as the instructions say and use different parts of the sharpening surface. I wasn't paying attention the first few minutes, and apparently I would end each sharpening pass in the exact same spot, creating a very very small notch on the edge of the stone. So I turned the stone around and made sure to vary the ending spot, and it seemed to buff out that little notch very quickly. My knife is now incredibly sharp--it seems to glide through material rather than "cut" it. I know some people would continue to go even higher with the grit, but for my purposes this whetstone is just perfect. I'll be tackling the kitchen knives next!

Quality stone at a good price
I primarily use this stone for sharpening chisels and planes and it has done a great job so far. I even used my straight razor on it and the outcome was pretty good (although you'll need a higher grit for better results). It came to me pretty flat right out of the box and I haven't any issues with mold or cracking. The rubber holders that come with it are great for keeping the stone from slipping on your work surface as well as to protect the underside from damage, and to keep the stone from being damaged while storing. Take care of it per the instructions and this stone will work out great for you.

Excellent Quality! Great Performance!
I’ve had this sharpening stone for about 4 months and it continues to produce great results. The build quality is awesome; it is still intact with no issues. The whetstone was easy to use and the supplied instructions were clear and easy to apply. This was the first occasion for me sharpening my knives myself, and I have become more proficient and confident with each use. The results speak for themselves - my knives are super sharp! I recently acquired a Japanese knife and I am looking forward to using my whetstone to refine that edge when it’s time to sharpen it. Overall, I am very satisfied with the quality and performance of this product. Thank you!

Separated after first use
This is a nice and well-performing whetstone combo. However, after first use and while rinsing it off the two layers began separating. I purchased the BearMoo 240/800 and 3000/8000 combos and they remain together. I'm kinda hoping they all separate to save me the hassle of flipping them over. I'm not sure if this sort of thing happens all the time with these as these are my first stones, but if not this issue might need attention. As far as sharpening ability, they seem to do just fine. The price is certainly reasonable. If they perform at least as well as stones costing double what these do, then they'll represent a great value. UPDATE (6 Jan 2017): Almost immediately after reviewing this I was contacted by a BearMoo representative, Ann, to address my concerns. They offered a replacement. I declined, but this is a sign of good customer service. I was told sharpening stones are a new product from the company, so any faults in the product are understandable. And by the way, all sharpening stones I ordered sharpen well. So thanks, Ann, for all your help. I know where to go to buy new sharpening stones when it's time.

Sharp knives again
This stone made my blunt kitchen knives sharp in under 15 minutes. It takes a little practice but after watching a couple of youtube videos you will have no problem. The quality of the stone is great for the price. Don’t hesitate, it’s worth it.

Very good sharpening stone for my needs at a good price.
My ‘BearMoo’ 2-IN-1 Whetstone arrived well-packaged and protected and was in perfect condition. The product description is very accurate and the items received seem to be of very good quality. The included rubber holder securely held the stone when sharpening, and it should work well for a long time. After sharpening 2 different types of knives, I feel the 2 grits of 1000 and 4000 are exactly what I will most often need. After about 10 minutes I was able to remove 3 chips in the blade of an average quality 10” kitchen knife and put on a good edge which cut very well. Then I was able to nicely sharpen a very dull but good quality pocket knife. The instructions were very clear and I found keeping the stone slightly wet worked better than when it started to dry somewhat. I fully soaked in water for 30 minutes prior to using. I did a lot of research and watched numerous videos prior to this purchase, and I can say that I am very pleased with my BearMoo 2in1 stone. Great value.

Works well, easy to use, good value, be careful with guide
Used it for the first time the next day after receiving it and overall am very satisfied. Got a really good result on my Japanese chef knife, it was full of knicks and dings in the blade and in just a few minutes on the 1000 grit side they were all smoothed out, looks brand new! The 6000 seems to do a good job refining the blade and then after a few passes on a honing rod the knife was sharp enough to shave hairs off my arm. Very satisfied with it! It didn’t work quite as well on my other cheap knives but I think that’s because of the type of steel they are made out of compared to my Japanese knife. Do be careful with the included guide, it left some marks on one of my cheap knives. Thankfully it’s only aesthetic, but still worth noting. Aside from that the guide is actually very helpful and works pretty well. Great value for money! Name brand stones can cost an arm and leg, so this product will really help more people maintain their knives themselves at home.

Does the job, if you put in the effort
...and that's the thing. I really don't have the time to use this properly, although I'm glad I have it. Can't compare it to any others but it seems fine.
