Komi Can't Communicate, Vol. 1

I just finished reading Komi Can't Communicate and I absolutely loved it! The story centers on Komi Shoko, a high school girl who is stunningly beautiful but struggles with severe social anxiety. Despite her popularity, she finds it incredibly hard to communicate with her classmates, which makes her feel isolated and alone. What really captured me was her connection with Tadano, a classmate who notices her struggle and genuinely wants to help her. Their budding friendship is heartwarming, and I found myself rooting for both of them. The humor in the story is fantastic there were moments that made me laugh out loud while also feeling deeply for Komi as she navigates her challenges. The art style is lovely and really enhances the emotions of the characters. You can see Komi’s expressions shift from anxiety to determination, and it makes her journey all the more relatable. Overall, Komi Can't Communicate is a delightful read. It beautifully explores themes of friendship, communication, and self-acceptance. I can’t wait to dive into the next volume and see how Komi continues to grow and connect with others!

Komi Can't Communicate centers around high school student Shoko Komi. She has a reputation as an aloof class beauty who is too good to talk to anyone in school. But, unbeknownst to most of her classmates, she actually suffers from crippling social anxiety and finds it far too difficult and stressful to try to talk to anyone despite having a desire to make friends. She meets fellow classmate Hitohito Tadano, a mostly normal, but somewhat awkward, student who figures out what Komi is going through. He resolves to help her out on her quest to improve her abysmal social skills and eventually make 100 friends. This volume 1 of the manga serves as the introduction of the series not only introducing Komi and Tadano, but also fellow students Najimi Osana and Himiko Agari. I am not a big manga reader myself and I recently decided to check out this series on a whim as it sounded humorous. I found that I enjoyed what this volume had to offer. I liked the artwork for this volume. The artist did a good job of creating expressive and distinct characters. There is never any doubt what kind of emotions the characters are experiencing during the events of the story whether it be happiness, nervousness, embarassment, etc. This really helped to tell the story and showing these different situations added to the humor. The story and characters are the main strong points of this manga. Komi is a cute character and it is easy to sympathize with her struggles of wanting a better social life, even if her anxiety is quite exaggerated compared to most anyone in real life. The story manages to take something that many people stuggle with and find the humor, and sometimes the hope, in the situation. Overall, I enjoyed this manga with its cast of likable and entertaining characters and enjoyable story.

Never before has a manga been able to truly reach inside and melt this icy heart of mine, giving me feelings of delight and felicity. Yet 'Komi Can't Communicate', also know as 'Miss Komi is Bad at Communication', has done just this. What we have here is a treasure of a story that features the super shy and very quite Komi Shouko, who is idolized by everyone at her school for being a "cool beauty", slowly open up to and come to fall in love with the first person who was able to truly understand her; Tadano Hitohito. Seeking to make 100 friends, Komi teams up with Tadano to weed through the school full of quirky and problematic people. In this first volume, we see Tadano's first interactions with Komi, simply enjoying the silent conversation the two have. Afterwards Tando wants to do his best to help Komi, but he's rather restricted in who he can find willing to listen. Which you might not think a problem, considering that everyone loves Komi, but being so idolized she is almost considered god-like to the point no one may speak to her or touch her lest they be punished. Eventually he turns to the only other person he has a relationship with at the school, an androgynous person by the name of Osana Najimi, a flirty and friendly trap? that is willing to give being Komi's friend a try but only after some lengthy convincing as they have found Komi to be rather unapproachable in the past. We get some introduction to other characters, likely candidates for friendship status, but this is mostly an introduction volume to Komi, Tanado, and Osana. But don't be fooled by that sentence, because while this is introduction is does it in a way that is like climbing into a soft bed with the A/C on. You just want to keep reading, seeing what happens next, and upon reaching the end, wanting more. I have no doubt this will see an anime adaption at some point, considering the cult popularity it is generating already. I just hope the author is able to keep this cute train a chugging, and not become lost in the forest of warm-fuzzies that have been generated.

This series and heartwarming and sweet. I loved every minute of it. I reread this every night before I sleep, as it helps me to cope with my existential dread. My wife left me last month and took the kids. Of course since I don't have an income they're sure to shut the power off any day now, so I won't be able to reread this before bed anymore as it will be too dark. But I will still be able to read it by daylight to ease my sorrow. It's starting to smell bad in here. I suppose I could take out the trash, but my wife always did that and I honestly never even learned where the dumpster is around here. Come to think of it, I'm not sure when the mortgage payment is due, so I probably won't be able to live here much longer... but that's okay as long as I can take volume 1 of Komi-Can't Communicate along with me! You see, Komi-chan is just like me, I haven't been able to speak with anyone for.. as long as I can remember. I used to communicate to my wife through sticky notes around the house and she usually wouldn't be able to find me because I would be hiding somewhere in the house. Often in a wardrobe or the dryer. (One time my son came to start the dryer when when I was in there. It was terrible, it was the first time I'd ever made eye contact with him and the terror in his eyes when he saw me was enough to confirm my fears of others.) That being said I don't think I'll ever be able to afford volume 2... But that's okay because volume 1 is so good! TL;DR: Great volume 1, highly recommend!

Had to replace the first copy that came because it was severely bent. The replacement was in great condition. Don’t be afraid to get replacements for these, it’s worth it. Plus the price is great for the book.

Some of us are born social butterflies destined to the sweet nectar life offers while the rest of us are so inept that the nectar is comically bitter. High school student Komi Shouko would definitely fall into the latter category: a girl with a captivating presence enough to grant her popularity among her classmates, yet so awkward she can only communicate through writing her words out. For Tadano Hitohito, a guy that wants to live a peaceful school life being the only one privy to this information aims to grant Komi's request to get rid of her Communication Disorder (or komyushou in Japanese) and make a 100 friends. And thus, Tomohito Oda's comedy series, Komi-san Can't Communicate (or Komi-san wa Komyushou Desu) begins! Unsurprisingly, if you are looking for a good time, you will have no trouble finding it here. You would really have to be trying hard not to otherwise. For a title all about creating whimsy out of a rather complicated lifestyle hindrance, Komi-san Can't Communicate is a real bingo champion in the comedy department hands down. For one, the character interactions, especially between Komi and Tandano are golden and range between cute to humorously cathartic. Being able to understand all her little idiosyncrasies based on her expression (that hardly ever changes) alone, it is something of an adorable charm for Komi but also a close example of how people with social anxiety wish they could open up and be understood. With Komi being far from the only character with personality quirks, the series also excels with the other cast members and how they interact with each other. Only being introduced to a limited selection of characters thus far, the interactions readers do witness give these characters enough time to shine and informs them of all they pretty much need to know. One of the most prominent characters readers will meet is Osana Najimi, an androgynous male that dresses as a female and steals the spotlight whenever he shows up. He also happens to be everyone's childhood friend. And yes, if you couldn't tell from the name of alone (or missed the footnotes), Oda really loves puns and wordplay, most of the character names alluding to their eccentric personalities or character trope. Unabashedly silly in every regard, these individual elements make up the sum of what makes Komi-san Can't Communicate a pleasant read for the time being. As far as the artwork goes, Oda style is nothing special as far as making the art standout but works for it is. Komi is the picture of a traditional beauty, yet when her panic attacks get the best of her, she turns into an adorable goofball that you can't help but want to root for. Coupled with the many expressions that the characters can assume at any given time, it is one of the things that helps in regards to the comedic timing. Being quick to miss it, the scene real estate panel to panel is impressive, with the author able to pack in a lot of small details that make the characters and their expressions standout. One technique I noticed often is using Komi's deadpan expression against a black background. Oddly enough, it makes her look more scarier than anything else. All that being said, being a fan of the eye catches between chapters, would it be too much trouble to ask Oda to put out an artbook? Ending off on a rather cute note and the friendship count only up to 3, Komi-san Can't Communicate seems like it will be a real wild and wacky ride. With only a fraction of the characters introduced proper and plenty of gags I want to see play out, Oda sells the audience on so much only to pull the line away at the last moment. Even though social anxiety can be debilitating, I think audience going through the same will get the most out the manga: seeing Komi starting to live an enjoyable life little by little. Of course, even for those that aren't, a serviceable and cute story await that you will most likely want to stick with until the end. Do your best at making friends and creating smiles, Komi.

A funny and heartwarming slice of life series. The chemistry between the characters feels natural, which is amazing given how extreme some of their personalities can get. Tadano is easy to relate to as an ordinary person surrounded by weirdness, and Komi herself is adorable. As someone who has trouble in dealing with social anxiety, it feels great to see her trying so hard to open up and reach out to new people. Definitely worth picking up if you want something light to read that'll give you a nice chuckle and some warm fuzzy feelings. ❤
