Really phenomenal speakers (terrible manual)
The sound from these speakers is simply amazing. I'm shocked a product this size can reproduce the sound it does. The volume levels are generous and only at the highest setting (which is really, REALLY loud) do you hear hissing that you hear from every set of speakers in existance at that high of volume. I don't hear the tinny treble a few people referred to, and I have several speaker sets (and a couple headphones) lying around my house that I'd describe as tinny so I know what I'm looking for. The bass is very filling and I wouldn't even call it dull like some reviewers have. It's not a 12inch subwoofer, but it's impressive. Going from Metallica to Daft Punk has really tested this systems bass and treble ranges, and it's passed with flying colors.I don't get any error messages about airplane mode when I dock it, and I love the fact I don't hear the speakers do the annoying feedback. In fact, my computer speakers are generating that sound 4 feet away from my iPhone while it's docked playing music, yet the Altec Lansing speakers are feedback free. It lowers the sound very briefly for notifications of email as well, a nice touch.I think there is some confusion with the adapter for iPhone. The "universal adapter" that most reviews refer to is just a plastic holder to support the iPhone better. I have a slightly bulky case on my iPhone, so I don't even require it. But it does come standard already put in place on the unit, it's just not a typical "adapter" that you'd expect. It's just a plastic cover basically. The manual on the other hand is about the most worthless piece of papers I've seen. The remote provides a battery, yet the compartment for inserting the battery is a little less than standard and a bit flimsy feeling. Since the plastic seemed a bit weak at the access point, I referred to the manual to see how to unlock the latch correctly. The manual says "In order to use the remote control, install the supplied battery in the remote's battery compartment". Gee. Thanks. But it gets better - next line "CAUTION: There's a danger of explosion if the battery is incorrectly replaced". So not only did the manual not help, now I'm scared. The "adapter" was a bit tricky to remove too, it's a little tough to see the niche to remove the piece. Again, the manual says "Remove the docking adapter for the iPhone from the T612 docking station". Wow. I don't need a step by step video guide, but when it bothers to print itself on 4 page booklet, you'd think they'd put in maybe a single diagram somewhere? Maybe? All in all, saying I'm very happy with this purchase is an understatement. The sound is fantastic and very room filling, feedback free, and works with both my ancient iPod and brand new iPhone. It's just what I was looking for and then some.

Great speaker for a good price
I wanted to buy a simple speaker(no alarm etc) for my Iphone that looked elegant, had great sound, I could wall mount, and control with a remote control (the wall mount is currently available direct from Altec Lansing for free with a minimal shipping charge).Other benefits that were not necessarily part of my decision but in hindsight I now see are quite significant -- the iphone does not need to be put onto 'airplane' mode (the speaker somehow prevents the interference buzz) which allows you to receive incoming calls, and the unit charges the iphone as it plays.I selected this speaker after listening to several different systems at my local 'superstore'. In terms of sound it was a clear winner and after a bit of searching I found Amazon had the best price for it.Out of the box the set up took about 30 seconds. I slotted my original iphone into the speaker unit and I got lovely sound with the remote controlling the iphone easily. Yesterday I upgraded to the Iphone 3G. I set it on the Altec Lansing but it kept popping out so I removed their iphone insert adapter (which pops right out with a little encouragement) - this allows the 3g phone to sit further down in the unit -- it's working beautifully now. I had read a couple of reviews saying that it was not compatible with the newer iphones but from my experience I think Altec Lansing has now resolved any preexisting issues -- both my phones play just fine. The speaker can play louder than I expected for its size and there's none of that tinny sound I heard in some of the similarly priced competition units. I have it in my living room and I love the sound quality I'm getting. I previously used my computer Bose sound system and the Altec Lansing is comparable and possibly even slightly better than the Bose.I would highly recommend this speaker, I am very pleased with it.

Great little unit but not perfect
After reading thru hundreds of reviews and listening to all the iPhone 3G compatable units on the market I choose the Altec T612. A couple reasons being its 60 watts and ability to produce 100db, no other manufacturers that I know of publishes a DB rating which is nice. This unit beat out the Sony SRSGU10IP which was a close second but since it didnt have seperate bass-treble controls it lost out and I do believe it was overpowered by Altecs 60 Watts RMS. The unit produces a nice full range sound that should please most listeners. I do wish it had a low volume bass boost and it starts to crackle on the high end when close to the maximum listening volume but I am pretty picky and am happy with the overall package. I think this has much more sound than the Igroove unit from another manufacturer. For Iphone 3G owners here is the low down, even if you order the free 3G Adaptor from Altec, if your phone has ANY kind of case it will not fit. I have an ultra-low profile Macally metro case and it wont sit in the dock. I just removed the stock dock and it sits fine without any dock for now although I have heard some report that it will loosen up over time and start disconnecting. The remote will only control song selection within a playlist but you cannot scroll thru different menus. I just created a large playlist and it works fine for me.I paid $150 for it shipped and would say its surely worth that. Although I would suspect some newer units will be released this year that improve upon its feature set.
