Q: Are any snails harmed or killed in thr making of these masks?

Yeah honestly I wish the manufacturer would state this though. There is another set of 10 here on Amazon that says right on the front that the snails are not harmed during this process. I wouldn't buy it otherwise.

Q: I'm concerned about the smell. I've never used a product like this (snail secretions). What can I expect-- smell wise?

Really there was no smell to it. I've used it twice now and I'm very pleased with the way my skin feels and looks afterwards.

Q: am sure this is a dumb question but it there a correct side of the mask to put against your skin once you open it up or are both sides the same?

No correct side - both are the same. There are flaps and notches you can adjust so the mask lays flatter on your face. There is an obvious top and bottom - two holes on top for the eyes and one hole on the bottom for the mouth ; )
