Beautiful art book for children and their families
This is an awesome art book for kids of all ages. The pictures are organized by topic, such as family, numbers, counting, senses, animals rather than by country, artist or time period. While all the paintings are by skilled artists, some are very familiar while others are much less so. The subject matter is all the sort of thing that would be of interest to children. At the same time, teenagers and adults could easily find much to learn from and admire in the paintings. My favorite stroke of genius in this book is the painting by John Molener, 1637, in the Old Dutch Masters style, of a woman changing a poopy diaper while a man sitting nearby holds his nose. This is in the section for the five senses and, of course, represents "smell." I think this book could easily hold the attention of of very young children looking at it alone, and would be wonderful to look at together with an adult as well.

A visually lush introduction to the world of art for children
My daughter has been enjoying this book with me since she was a baby. The book, and the works of art it portrays, are visually compelling. I appreciate the way the art is organized, by categories that children can relate to, such as "At Home" and "In the Garden". This works quite well, and the explanatory captions are large enough for young readers to read and grasp. Unfortunately, not so the titles of the artistic works or the names of the artists, which are in minuscule print situated underneath the images, as if these captions are mere afterthoughts. Certainly, an adult can read the captions for a child, but why not make it easier for young readers to access and therefore savour the discovery of these works of art on their own, in silent reading, unmediated by their grownups? Otherwise, a delightful art book, and heartily recommended.

Not that great
I am not much into arts, but this book didn’t catch my attention nor my kids. I purchased this book because it was on the list for a homeschooling program.

) has really loved it. She studies the pictures and is intrigued ...
I hesitated (for a couple of years!) before buying this book. I didn't know if my daughter would take to it, if the pictures would be interesting to her at all. She (7 y.o.) has really loved it. She studies the pictures and is intrigued by the details - didn't just flip through it and throw it to the side.

I like that the pictures teach things like the seasons
My three year old saw the oversized book and instantly was interested. We read it once together and then she looked over it again by herself. I like that the pictures teach things like the seasons. The "inappropriate" naked pictures were all on the same page spread and were tastefully done.

useful for early art education
This book is a nice introduction to the different kinds of art. My children liked the book and wished it had more pictures and more descriptions as to the different kinds of paintings.

This was part of my kindergarten homeschool program, and was such a sweet part of the day - sitting a little dolly on my lap to look at and discuss beauty... what a lovely way to share life :
