Fast and reliable
This is my first laser printer, so I don't know how it compares to others, but it's dramatically faster than my old HP inkjets. A 10-page pdf magazine article prints in seconds. I've run a few hundred pages though the printer so far without a single problem. The single sheet feeder is a bit tricky to feed paper into. It's also used for envelopes, which for some reason always come out with a crunched corner -- a minor annoyance for me, but probably not acceptable for some uses. The machine is also pretty noisy when it fires up, but it goes back to silent sleep mode soon enough when not in use. My only other complaint is that the "starter" cartridge that comes with the printer seemed to be significantly less than 50% full as advertised. Soon after seeing the low-ink warning, it stopped printing altogether until I installed a new cartridge (much cheaper at Amazon than, say, Staples).

Excellent Printer with a few notes...
I just replaced my Brother MFC8300 with this machine which was finally showing some wear and producing poor copies (after 3 years of daily use). My old machine incorporated a fax function which I did not use. This machine has the sheet fed and flat bed scanner capacity which I will use heavily in my small business. I have had a seperate sheet fed scanner which I have scanned over 15000 documents and it was also starting to produce inferior scans. What surprised me about this machine is the ease of setting it up, the functionality of the sheet fed scanner which can produce multiple page scans into one file, and the overall ease of use. One thing that I was unsure about was scanning documents to pdf files, but I was able to set this function up in the control center and have the machine default to pdf files from the scan button on the machine. All I have to do is hit scan, choose file type, and press set (3 buttons) to start scanning a multi page document. I am quite sure that I will be able to trash my stand alone scanner ($400 retail) for this machine. As stated from some of the previous review's the machine is a bit louder and 'clunkier' sounding then my older unit. Also, the time it takes to start printing is a bit longer, but the unit is much faster once it begins to print. The picture of the unit makes it look a lot larger then it really is and it really doesn't take anymore desk space then the previous unit. I don't have a problem with the curling issues or retrieving documents in the space provided; in fact, I like not having the retrieval tray sticking out like my previous unit.Overall, I'm a very happy purchaser of this unit and if it gives me the same service as my previous Brother products, I expect to get several years use out of it. Thanks Brother...and Amazon for a fantastic price and superior quick and free shipping!

NOT for envelope printing
Overall this all-in-one does a decent job, but one of the items I NEED a printer to do is print envelopes, and sadly this printer just can't do a decent job on envelopes. Most of the envelopes I've tried to print come out crooked, and many have ghost images (duplicate images slightly offset from the main image). This happened to 4 out of 5 envelopes I've tried to print, and nothing I do seems to fix the problem. If you don't need to print envelopes, this printer seems adequate. If envelope printing is important, just stay away from this printer.

I love this machine!!!
I bought this machine 2 1/2 months ago and I've been very happy with it. As somebody else here pointed out, the plastic casing LOOKS a little flimsy in person, but don't let that fool you. It is very well designed. A few things I like about it:1. Prints come out fast and clear.2. The driver is simple, yet powerful. It won't take over your computer, but it is easy to do manual double-sided printing, N-in-1 composition, 1-in-N segmented poster printing, etc.3. The console controls are reasonably easy to use.4. It does MORE than it says it does. Copying, printing, and scanning work just as well as having 3 dedicated machines on your desk. Furthermore, you CAN do multi-page sheetfed scanning. The specification isn't clear about that.5. The price is unbelievable for what you get, IMHO.A few caveats:1. Paper curls a little, especially when you print double-sided (manually). It's not bad. It doesn't bother me.2. If you just pop the installation CD in, it will want to install a couple other applications, maybe a light version of PaperPort and an OCR application. I don't need that stuff, so it's a little bit of a nuisance. However, if you look around on the CD, it's easy to find the program that installs just the driver and nothing else.3. The envelope feeder looks pretty minimal. I haven't actually tried to print an envelope, but it looks like it might go in crooked. I'm not sure.I spent a long time comparing all-in-one machines. I'm 100% sure I made the right choice, given my budget and needs.
