Based on the Spider-Man comic books, Spider-Man: Battle for New York pits the super arachnophile against his old foe, the Green Goblin. This game will let you choose to play as Spiderman or the Green Goblin. Depending on who you choose to be, your goal will be to save and destroy New York City using all the tools and weapons available to you. And guile - you need wits and guile. Will you succeed?

Torus Games overall delivers with this handheld exclusive
Ultimate Spider-Man was a FANTASTIC game by developer Treyarch. You couldn't have asked for a better debut for Spideys "Ultimate" universe in videogame form. I always wanted a sequel and I was surprised it never got one, especially since it was so well received. Though low and behold some time later I came to find out that we actually did get another Ultimate Spider-Man game, but it wasn't a sequel as it was a stand alone game and, very oddly, it was exclusive to Nintendo handheld. Spider-Man: Battle For New York was developed by Torus Games (who are no strangers to comic book games as they've developed Fantastic Four GBA, Fantastic Four: Flame On, The Invincible Iron Man and Spider-Man 2: The Sinister Six) and is a retelling/reimagining of Spidey's first encounter with the Ultimate version of the Green Goblin. If you've played Vicarious Visions DS version of Ultimate Spider-Man then you'll be right at home with Battle For New York as the gameplay is exactly the same albeit with new touch screen solutions/mini games. If you haven't then here's the rundown. Gameplay wise it's a 2.5D side scrolling action adventure game with 3D backgrounds and characters and what's cool is that, like Ultimate Spider-Man, you get to play both hero and villain as you play with Spidey and Goblin in the campaign. As Goblin you'll wreck havok through NYC looking to destroy Spider-Man and building your goblin army while also trying to evade being captured by S.H.I.E.L.D (Fury is hot on Osborn's tail), and with Spidey you'll have to pick up after Goblins rampage as you're tasked with saving civilians, stopping bad guys and (against Fury's direct order) help S.H.I.E.L.D in trying to stop and obtain Osborn. Along the way Spidey and Goblin will have to deal with the Simian, Silver Sable, a new goblin like creature with electric powers created by Osborn (no name given), and the Kingpin before the final showdown with each other. In between levels the story is told through comic book panels drawn by artist Ron Lim which look great, and they also are accompanied by a TON of voice acting which was a very nice surprise. Overall, while not as good as the DS version of Ultimate Spidey, it's still a decent adventure in the Ultimate universe and worth the pick up if you happen to see it for a good price. Overall I'd give it a 7 outta 10

2x the fun with spiderman and green goblin
This game is a challenging game waiting for expert gamers to buy it. It is a lot of fun and it is not very easy. It is a lot of fun because you get to play as spiderman and the green goblin. The only negative thing I would say about it is it is a little too challenging. Imagine being at the first boss in this game, after completing 1 lv. with spiderman and 1 lv. with the green goblin. The next level is fighting the green goblin with spiderman and the green goblin uses the cheapest moves known to video games!!!! Other than that it is a very good game waiting for people to buy it!!!

Two boys' review: Play in a slick 3D comic book
Just like in Ultimate Spider-Man you are playing in Mark Bagley's comic book world, a 3D environment that feels as though you're jumping in and out of the pages and panels of a comic book. You play half the game as Spider-Man and the other half as the Green Goblin. You fight gang members and save New Yorkers caught in the action. The fighting gets monotonous though and older kids are going to get tired soon. Younger players will mind it as much but don't expect them to reach for this game so quickly a month after you buy it.As a parent, the minigames were frustrating. The one involving the locks requires you to lift an increasing number of tumblers into place. Each tumbler shakes and falls if left in place too long. My kids often would ask me to help them get past these minigames. The side-scrolling levels are easy to follow but they look a lot better than you'd expect due to the 3D and comic book style. Younger kids will appreciate the music and sound effects that combine to really take you into Spider-Man's universe. The game is shorter than other adventure titles on the Nintendo DS but rates about average for the beat-'em-up superhero games available.

Slightly above average beat 'em up with Spidey
Spider-Man and beat 'em up's go hand in hand, especially on portable systems. Spider-Man: Battle for New York for the DS is a slightly above average beat 'em up featuring Marvel's resident wall-crawler, and also allows you to play as Spidey's nemesis, the Green Goblin. While playing as both characters, you both aim to save and destroy the city, while avoiding various enemies and hazards. The basics of the game are the typical kind you'd find in a portable beat 'em up, but the game looks so good that you'll hardly notice or care. Battle for NY nicely utilizes the DS' ability for 3-D graphics and cell-shaded animation effects surprisingly well (you may recall the Spider-Man 2 movie tie in game did as well when the system launched) and the game controls quite good as well. There are a few character based mini-games as well that use the touch screen, and the game isn't really any better or worse with or without them. What really hurts Battle for NY is that the game is incredibly short. There's no real bonuses to unlock either or anything to offer some replayability, and there's no Wi-Fi or multiplayer compatibility (which would have been sweet). That aside, Spider-Man: Battle for New York isn't a bad game whatsoever, and is definitely worth checking out, but it could have been much, much better.
