Get Every Book Illustrated By Beth Krommes!
I *may* be partial, because I know Beth, but even if I didn't, I would want every book she's ever illustrated. The Calecott honor is not given lightly (she was awarded for The House In The Night), and she deserves it without question. Her illustrations are beautiful and simple enough for very young children to appreciate, but they are also incredibly complex, if you consider her chosen medium, which is scratchboard. We have been getting the board book versions to stand up to the baby/toddler years, but will be happy to replace them with the hardback copies when we're not so concerned about drool and ripped pages :)The content of the books she illustrates is lovely, too. Often nature-based, always calming and perfect for bedtime. Can't recommend enough!

Beautifully illustrated children’s book
Swirl by Swirl is a beautifully illustrated children’s book. It is an easy read for our 3 & 5 year olds. They enjoy the book and love the animals in the story. The only issue is on the last page, it identifies an animal that you can’t see in the picture because it is out of frame. Not a big deal.

Absolutely wonderful
Beth Krommes is hands-down one of my favorite living children’s illustrators. Her work is simply magical. The House in the Night is one of our most treasured books; my one year-old used to scream when I would stop reading it at the end and we would have to start again. This one seems to be growing on her just as much now that she’s two. She especially loves the spread with the flowers, and stops to point out each one of them and say their names as best she can. The story here is lovely and simple and the illustrations really take you away to another world. Worth every penny; buy it.

One of our "50 For 50" Party Best Selections
My husband, Don, and I decided to celebrate our 50th wedding anniversary by providing 50 books - along with an ice cream party - to 50 children (ages 2 - 4 years old) in a downtown center that provides day care services for the children of working poor. Each child received a different book with his or her name already in it. We ordered all of the books from Amazon. Some were "old faithfuls" used when our own children and/or older grandchildren were young. Other choices were unknown quantities to us until our shipments arrived. Swirl by Swirl: Spirals in Nature, fell into the "unknown quantity" group. This extraordinary book became one of the brightest stars of our "50 for 50" selections! It brilliantly and beautifully displays the marvelous spirals found in our world in impressive, educational ways that communicate with little ones and with their adult care-givers. The production values are superb. It should be - if it isn't already - also used by classroom teachers, especially in math, science and art, along with parents, grandparents and all others who love children and recognize the enormous value for children in owning their own (good) books! I plan to order another copy of "Swirls" as a gift for our youngest grandchild, now two. "Swirl by Swirl ..." is a "keeper" destined for classic status stardom in the field of children's literature. That assessment is my humble prediction, anyway.

Meh
I’m a science nerd and I struggled with how dry this book was. For whatever reason, my daughter has (on a handful of occasions), asked to be read this book. But we don’t usually get through it all. It’s literally about swirls found in nature and the statements are “they snuggle”, “they are strong”, those sorts of things. “They” is swirls. ....

A truly beautiful book
I loved this book. It is suitable for young children but is not baby-ish in any way. The language is simple but powerful. However it is the illustrations which really make this book a work of art. Highly recommended for all ages and for people who love superb illustration.

Great curriculum connections
This strongly illustrated but not overly wordy picture book is, in my opinion, a wonderful medium through which young learners can be introduced to concepts in science, mathematics and art. Beautiful etching style illustrations provide a springboard to a rich artistic style that can be taught at many levels of the curriculum. The content provides a bridge between mathematics and the understanding of natural sciences as well as an introduction to research which might enlighten understanding of cultures through symbolism and wayfinding. An amazingly designed book for all ages.
