Make that change!
Coruscating, insightful and indeed an inspirational book from Dr Daniel.I thoroughly recommend it to everyone, patients, parents, and doctors, alike. The missing link to a better, more productive and happier life is undoubtedlythrough greater understanding of our wonderful brain and it's multi modal functioning.Dr Amen's pioneering work on brain function and behaviour has come at an importanttime in our evolution. Now, more than ever, we have the tools and methods tolook closer at human behaviour and see greater possibilities and solutions for healingand optimal working of our brains and ultimately our behaviour. No longer does the internal workings of our grey matter have to be shroudedin the cloak of obscurity and ignorance. The guessing games, the blind faith, the conjecturecan now be pushed to one side. The doors of understanding and awareness have beenwell and truly opened. And,this book is just the beginning, tip of the iceberg, in brain research. But what a great start fromDr Amen and who better to lead the way and show us how to change our brains and ultimatelychange our lives, for the better. For all of us.Also,if you haven't see any of Daniels videos on YouTube,do so now.You will be inspired, moved and engaged in so many ways, he's a fantastic speaker!

possibly the best self-help book for mental health conditions
There are many useful self-help books on mental health problems - and a good book is often more helpful than a mediocre professional person. In my view, Amen's book is possibly the best self-help book in the field. What makes his work distinct is his study of sophisticated SPECT brain scans, which demonstrate how the brain is malfunctioning in many common states of mind - anxiety states, depression, OCD, ADHD etc. The data make vividly clear the brain state basis of these common problems - and, most importantly, outline helpful ways to counter these and facilitate optimum brain function. A truly shocking feature is Amen's data on the appalling damage to brain function resulting from the use of common recreational drugs and alcohol. He shows pictures of brain function (not brain anatomy) that reveal multiple holes where the brain is not working in people who have abused drugs or alcohol. Amen's work makes much of current psychiatry and psychotherapy (which is not based on a clear understanding of brain function, as revealed by SPECT scans)seem extremely primitive - although there remains a definite role for psychotherapy. Sadly, SPECT scans are not yet routinely available.

Great
Very interesting CD for people who suffer with anxiety, depression and other mental illnesses and how these illness relate to the brain itself and the remedies that can assist people in getting better. After I hear the CD I brought the book for better understanding. I would recommend this CD to anyone who is interested in the subject of mental health.Note the reason for the four star score is that I thought this was a self-help CD and was a little surprised when it wasn't.

It helped me to understand people better
I needed this book, although I wasn't aware of it at the time. This gave me a better insight into the behaviours of others, and has helped me become more calm and understanding to those who suffer with mental illness.I was very ignorant at the time to how people could think and behave in certain ways, but now I understand and am less agitated.

Very good book.
I found this book very interesting and helpful as it has help me to understand more deeper about my husband depression and problems. I would be over the moon if one day we could afford to see Dr D. Amen in person and my husband could have a brain SPECT study.

Give it a try: you'll be surprised!
Very insightful book, with tons of stories to illustrate the scientific discoveries of the author. Above all, I loved the way this book presents us several exercises, come of them as simple as a checklist, to help us improve our quality of life.
