Really positive training method 🐾
I’m currently a hundred & odd pages in, & have read enough to know that this book was an excellent purchase. It’s been over a decade since I last owned & needed to train a puppy, & having recently acquired two chug puppers, I thought it might be a good idea to brush up on my skills. Training methods are constantly evolving, & a lot has changed over the years. I really like this book because it focuses on positive reinforcement to shape a puppy’s behaviour, rather than punishment & constant correction. The author makes it very clear that there’s no such thing as a bad puppy, just an owner that has neglected to be vigilant, & consistent. The book is common sense in print really, instead of picking up on everything your doggo shouldn’t be doing, focus on what you’d like them to do instead, it’s half the effort, & is much less confusing for all. I’ve had to unlearn saying variants of “No” to my new puppies, because it’s just not effective, it’s exhausting & frustrating for both yourself & your puppy when you’re constantly finding fault with their behaviour & trying to correct it. The foundation for the training method described in the book is to have a praise party when puppy does something you want them to do, reward with lots of fusses & a tasty treat, & pup soon learns that good things happen when they behave a certain way, & nothing exciting happens when they behave inappropriately. It makes perfect sense! Another useful tip I’ve learned is to really reinforce the “sit” command for lots of different situations, that way if your pupper friend is in doubt about what to do in an unfamiliar situation, their likely response is to sit, because they know good things happen when they do. That’s so simple it’s genius! I’m sure I’ll have picked up plenty more useful training tips by the time I’ve finished reading, but I’m already seeing progress with my puppies thanks to the bits I’ve implemented from the first half of the book. I’d really recommend this book for first time puppy owners, as well as experienced dog owners alike, there’s always things about your training that can be improved upon, & this book is clear, concise & written in an accessible manner, with lots of humour; it’s a brilliant & informative read at an excellent price.

Best puppy book.
This book was the spark that set me off on a whole new journey. Steve’s humour, down-to-earth style and the way he explains things so simply had me hooked from the first page. It didn’t just help me understand training better - it inspired me to take the IMDT 2-day course, which I’ve now completed, and to start my journey as a dog trainer focusing on one particular breed close to my heart. The balance of solid advice with laugh-out-loud moments makes it such an easy and enjoyable read. If you want training that feels clear, practical and genuinely fun, this is the book for you. Steve proves that it really can be easy peasy.

Good info and takeaways
Book itself is fantastic. I bought a used, but very good version however and the quality was probably only fair at best. Doesn’t detract from what a fab book it is though with great info and easy to follow instruction

Great, simple steps. 100% recommend.
I bought this for my partner as a Christmas present in preparation for bringing home our Golden Retriever puppy. It’s been SO helpful for us both. Super easy to digest, amazing tips and tricks. The “Den Wizard” in particular helped us to crate train our puppy in three days - she explores in there independently and settles for naps with minimal whining. Winner!

Essential Read!
I think all puppy owners should have to read this before being allowed to get a puppy. I have had my puppy 12 days and she is doing so well because of what this book has taught me. It genuinely works and I understand the puppy better as a result of reading it!

One of my best purchases ever!!!
Bought just before we got our puppy. My husband had had dogs in the past but I hadn’t. This book taught me how to prep our home and how to have the correct mindset to deal with a dog. Many of the fears I’d had ( toilet training, biting/ nipping, chewing, feeding, would he like us.. the list goes on) were put to rest by reading this book. It’s well written and funny as well as informative so it holds your attention. My husband and myself were almost fighting to read it as it was so good and intuitive. Yes, our dog still chews my slippers, but thanks to the book I know that i can only be angry with myself for leaving them in his reach. Learning when things are my fault and not the dogs has taught the whole family to tidy up after themselves or risk things getting ruined; and our dog is a happy, housetrained, mainly obedient and mostly a wonderfully appreciated member of our family. Have recommended this book several times over to friends and family considering a dog, and when I hear or read stories of people with a new dog I‘m very smug in the knowledge that I don’t have any of their problems mainly because I’ve read this book and having some common sense helps too!

Some good points but not good enough
After reading the reviews and seeing some footage of Steve Mann I had such high hopes for this book. We are new to getting a puppy so I wanted a complete guide for novices on raising a happy puppy. Unfortunately this didn’t hit the mark. Far too many times I was left frustrated when certain aspects weren’t explained very well (For example: It’s OK to comfort your puppy at night - but no explanation as to what is the right way to not end up with an issue in future?) Training was explained reasonably well but help and advice on what to do if things are going wrong was lacking for me. The other thing he fails to point out a lot is what the benefits are of doing certain things with your dog. What do they get out of it? After all isn’t that why we’re doing it. Eye contact was a classic example. Amazing I can get my dog to look at me but where and how do I put this to practical use for me and my dog other than bonding with them. I purchased The Perfect Puppy as well and honestly this was a far more comprehensive guide for new puppy owners. Buy that instead!

An Invaluable Step by Step Guide to Puppy training
I bought Steve Mann's high-quality guide to understand more about puppy training because my friend Jane has just got two rescue dog puppies. This guide by Steve Mann covers everything from the first night of having a dog to all the essentials like toilet training, including a Poo and Pee Diary for overnight, toiletting, and different types of urination. There's a very useful section on dog body language, including signals like stretching, yawning, scratching, and what to watch for in their eyes, mouth, tail, ears, head, and feet. Detailed instructions for teaching Sit are provided, along with the 3Ds, which are Duration, Distraction, and Distance. This guide includes many case studies related to various training scenarios. A chapter on mouth manners discusses chewing and teething and introduces the concept of positive interruptors. These are special sounds that make puppies drop what they're doing and come running. Socialisation. tips cover how to introduce your dog to people and proper dog park etiquette. This guide explains jumping up, reflex to name (where puppies can't resist checking in when they hear their name), eye contact training, loose lead walking, and recall commands for recall. Steve Mann describes how puppies come running towards you with the speed of a puma when called. He also explains nose targeting, holding out your hand and saying touch, so the puppy touches their nose against your hand and other practical tips like the rucksack walk. There's a chapter on puppy school classes, group classes, and vet visits. This guide ends with goodbyes and good luck wishes. The photographs at the back are excellent for illustrating some of the concepts discussed overall. I have no hesitation in recommending this book to anyone who is looking for practical strategies and tips to train their puppy.

Great and funny puppy training?
It’s such a great book! It’s funny and fun to read. I’ve honestly learned from it more than puppy classes. There are many practical examples and fun stories. I can’t recommend it enough - you must read this book when you get a puppy!

Super
Très intéressant, plein de bons conseils et sympa à lire car l’auteur ne se prend pas au sérieux avec de l’humour sans perdre le sérieux que le sujet mérite.

Essential advice for training your new puppy
This was an easy read with some great advice - much of it common sense but also many great tips. We have been reading this prior to collecting our first puppy. The author is an experienced dog trainer and tells the reader how it is with humour and sensible advice. Will probably refer to it frequently as we navigate the challenges of introducing him to our family and our home.

Kaufen!
