X-Factor Vol. 19: Short Stories (X-Factor (2005-2013))

Collecting: X-Factor #246-249Bonus: Pencil & Ink GalleryIf  X-Factor - Volume 18: Breaking Points (X-Factor (Graphic Novels))  showed X-Factor splintering and shedding members, Short Stories swings the pendulum in the other direction and shows the team pulling together in order stave off what is literally the unleashing of hell on earth. Issue 246 focuses on the oft overlooked receptionist, Pip--the troll. When he's not manning the phones, Pip apparently goes around letting women think that he is Peter Dinklage and using his powers to actually generate revenue for X-Factor investigations. Issue 247 is the honeymoon episode. Layla and Madrox are in Vegas when a real murder mystery must be solved: a pretty famous dead guy has come back from beyond the grave to kill Lincoln impersonators! These disparate events begin to come together as the X-Factor team realizes that these mysterious events are actually the result of a curse on the 7 Billionth soul on earth (it's apparently a bit like the opposite of winning the lottery). At any rate, the seven billionth soul ushers in the end of the world and hell on earth--starting with the Bronx!Issue 249 is very unusual for the X-Factor series in that it is an epic superhero battle. X-Factor has had a lot of infighting lately, but they are able to put their problems aside to deal with lava and demons in the NY Botanical Gardens.I recommend X-Factor to both readers who love the main X-titles AND to those who don't. This graphic novel opens with a great episode of noir turned on its ear and ends with an all out superhero battle. If you're not a fan of strictly superhero titles, I think Peter David's X-Factor has enough human drama and enough experimentation with the genre to appeal to you.The art is handled by Paul Davidson (issues 246 & 248) and Leonard Kirk (issues 247 & 249). Davidson's trench coat clad Pip is perfect, and artistically #246 is probably the best in this novel (the color palette dials in "noir" perfectly even as Pip's antics make you groan). The full page PI Pip is brilliant. Kirk's zombie is also great. Kirk phenomenally handled Breaking Points and continues to provide great panels, but there wasn't a standout moment like the private dick Pip. However Kirk is provided ample opportunities to show off Lorna's new costume that debuted in Breaking Points.The dramatic battle between X-Factor and forces of Hell continues in  X-Factor - Volume 20: Hell on Earth War (X-Factor (Graphic Novels))

This was not good. Peter David can be quirky and fun but this was disappointing. Every page seemed like filler. I don't know why a writer who appears to have tons of control editorially would make the book drag on so long. The good art couldn't help the wasted space. Overall, a bummer.

Voici resurgir de la pile "à lire", à la faveur des vacances, un petit trade paperback paru dans le cadre du deuxième "run" du scénariste Peter David avec l'équipe de mutants "X-Factor" (2006-2013), entre ' X-Factor Vol. 18: Breaking Points ' et l'avant-dernier recueil de la série, ' X-Factor - Volume 20: Hell on Earth War '.Quatre comic books seulement figurent dans ce livre ("X-Factor" #246-249), qui présente une même histoire avec deux axes originels, le premier concernant le personnage de Pip avec des dessins de Paul Davidson, et l'autre impliquant plus particulièrement les jeunes mariés Jamie Madrox et Layla Miller avec les dessins de Leonard Kirk.Pip le Troll, qui tient l'agence d'enquêtes privées "X-Factor" lorsque l'équipe n'est par là, s'arrange comme il peut pour "choper" des filles et se retrouve au terme d'une de ses entreprises à mener seul une enquête. Il semble d'abord bien s'en tirer en paraissant déjouer une conspiration contre X-Factor, jusqu'à une très mauvaise surprise pour lui... et des retrouvailles avec Thanos et son amie la Mort. Pip parvient à s'échapper pour revenir sur Terre mais il se retrouve dans le corps de <spoiler intercepté>.Pendant ce temps, Layla et Jamie sont réveillés dans leur hôtel de Las Vegas, au terme de leur nuit de noces, par des enquêteurs à la recherche de l'assassin... de celui qui les a mariés la veille ! Mettant sa lune de miel entre parenthèses, le couple remonte la piste vers un Général Robert E. Lee zombifié...A New York, le reste de l'équipe a trouvé le corps inanimé de Pip et se met aussi en action. De retour à New York par avion, Layla et Jamie sont dirigés contre leur gré par leur taxi au jardin botanique de la ville. Là, ils retrouvent leurs collègues qui ont remonté une piste. L'ensemble de l'équipe doit alors faire face aux fameux conspirateurs qui souhaitent leur chute.Les "extras" comprennent les reproductions de quelques dessins préliminaires et de quelques planches encrées.L'ensemble de cet ouvrage n'appartient sûrement pas à la catégorie des chefs d'oeuvre de l'art séquentiel et, même dans le contexte étroit de ce "run" de X-Factor, avec notamment les dessins très moyens de Davidson, ne constitue pas l'un des plus réussis.
