Geeze, it's a tamper, not a cardiac stent.
I truly don't understand people and their reviews. It's a tamper. It's nominally 53mm. It's got a rounded wood handle that is comfortable in the hand - it is bottom-heavy (gosh, 🙄 it's supposed to be). What "balance" could you have on a tamper? Is it too big or too small for your hand? Does it give you splinters? Does it mysteriously turn green like a carnival diamond ring? These are relatively meaningful questions. It's a tamper, not a cardiac stent. It fits well in a Breville 54mm portafilter and OEM basket (if anyone asks).Honestly, I have no idea about "durability" but I assume, someone, somewhere could damage it.Look at the picture - it must tamp OK, it made a puck with 6month old pre-ground espresso coffee on the very first try.Buy one. If you don't like it, buy something else.

Ok. ... a definite Improvement over a Plastic Tamper ...
.A noticable improvement over a plastic tamper - but not the best option.Balance: very light handle / heavy base = far from ideal.Base: real Stainless Steel. an "ok" finish - has appearance flaws it shouldn't have.Wood Handle Finish: High gloss. Considerable Color Variation - got 2 (returned wrong size sent) - one was: Walnut colored / the other: Rosewood colored - otherwise fine.Wood Quality: looks nice enough ... but VERY small & lightweight - & therefore has a bit of a cheap feel & poor balance.Size: ordered the size we needed but got the next larger size instead - even though the box had the correct size marked on it. Had to return it & repurchase again.Price: ok. - an ok choice - if you can't spend more & definitely want a wood handle.RECOMMENDATION: - Spend more & get a better tamper. - If you want a wood - get one with a real Hardwood handle (cherry, ash, oak, walnut, etc) - heavier, for better balance - like Made in Italy - Motta brand. - if you want the BEST available Tamper:spend a little more (in the big scheme of your overall espresso machine investment) - & get the 1 piece / Made in the USA - from USA Food Grade Stainless Steel - PURPLE MOUNTAIN brand tamper ...The Purple Mountain is a truly awesome piece of hardware!!!It's Beautifully balanced, OUTSTANDING Performance, & well worth the extra investment for those SERIOUS about their Espresso.* see pics

Ever so slightly crooked handle
Fits my pre-millenium La Pavoni Europiccola stock (single shot) basket. Will be testing further with double shot baskets when they arrive.I like the weight and feel; it's light. Handle came slightly but noticeably crooked/uneven, and the handle is off-center from the metal tamping part. I used an allen wrench as a 90 degree straightedge to compare the angle, and you can see that one side of the handle bulb is a little lopsided, as well as being slightly crooked. For less than $10, though, I'm not sure why I'm complaining. It is easy to compensate for an even tamp at an odd angle, I just wish the handle was centered properly. As you can see it fits my 49mm basket perfectly. Tamps just fine, it's just quirky.

My favorite tamper
I've had this for a few weeks now and I absolutely love it. I use it on my la pavoni Napolitana which has a 57mm portafilter. The actually dimension of the basket is 57.55mm so this really worked being 57.5mm. I did switch out the handle as it felt a bit cheap. Overall amazing!

Bulletproof
I just got this so I don't acutally know how long it will last, but it feels indestructible. Fits the portafilter for my Starbucks Barista Saeco SIN006 great. Yeah, I have one of those. Look, I'm not spending $500 on an espresso machine. All I make are lattes anyway, good enough is good enough.

Heavy, and that's good
This is the third different tamper I've tried ... and the last. It's heavy enough just to rest it on the coffee in the filter and get sufficient compaction. Also, that's a lot more reproducible preparation than pressing the coffee down. Only reason I took off a star for ergonomic is it's unbalanced. Before I decided to make it's home sitting on top of the espresso maker, I dropped it several times taking it out of the cabinet above. Perhaps a backweight on the handle would improve this aspect.

Good product recommend
Good quality and arrived as expected. The tamper gives a good weight which really helps when I tamp the grinds.
