GREAT tool, very little room for improvement.
I've had the HMD 150 as an INDISPENSABLE tool in my arsenal for over a year now. This tool is a semi-major investment that I avoided for some time, and an investment I should've found a way to make much sooner than I did.I work with medium to heavy duty applications repairing, modifying, and maintaining a fleet of commercial car hauling trailers and the rigs that pull them. The low profile of this drill makes it ideal for portable, tough to reach areas, such as truck frames. You can make machine grade holes with no heat in truck frames without removing the dual wheels. I've used this drill to modify several fifth wheel arrangements for car hauling applications. The results are spectacular, and manufacturer grade.Only a few things I'd change about the HMD904, and I'd pay for the changes, they'd be worth it:-a guide quill that's spring loaded all the way down the length of the drill's throw. The quill is only loaded with spring tension when the drill shaft is all the way at the top of its swing. As you pull the handle and bring the cutter close to the work, the spring does not maintain tension on the guide quill, making perfect centering of the cutter into your center punch too much (unnecessary) guesswork. A bit of engineering revision is needed here.-A variable speed rheostat that compensates for load, maintaining constant RPM like the blue brand has (starts with m, ends with a)The fixed rpm of this drill is too slow for the smallest cutters it will take, and too fast for the largest cutters it will take. You can compensate for it with some experience, cutting oil intervals, and lessening the drill load, but it would be worth some extra money to have a variable speed.-electromagnet strength. The magnet is a bit weak in some situations. I understand that more magnet strength = more windings, more weight, and a more cumbersome base, therefore expense, but again, worth it to me.-swiveling head. Some areas I've worked with this drill I could not get the cutter into the area it needed to be due to obstructions, bolts, flanges, etc- without elaborate jigs and fixtures that weren't practical to make for one-time use. I had to skip using the drill altogether because of this, using a hand drill and other Hougen cutters instead. Much more labor intense and less accurate.I generally find ways to work around weaknesses, and if Hougen offered me my money back in exchange for this drill, I wouldn't take it, that's how much I like it. Not as versatile as it could be, but still a very well built tool that will outlast most of the people who buy it.
