Wycliffe - Complete Collection - Series 1 to 5 + Christmas Special: Dance of the Scorpions [11 DVD Box Set] (1994)

For some reason I was wary about buying this set, not having seen it on telly before. I am in the middle of the whole wonderful series at the minute and loving it. Well written, well produced, well acted, beautifully low key, a bit old fashioned and, best of all, set here in Cornwall. I recognise almost every location instantly. The 'local' accents and 'locals' are a riot, as in Doc Martin! You upcountry folk have a very funny idea about uz down 'ereI I so prefer a series like this to a lot of what is on offer on television these days. I have had no problem with any of the dvds and, in fact, have found them to be of better visual quality than I was expecting, especially having just watched the whole of the original series of All Creatures Great and Small where the picture quality was not great. I also very much like the measured portrayal of Wycliffe.

I watched this first time around. A little bit rough round the edges but good for its time. Enjoyable

Against the backdrop of wild, windswept Cornwall, no nonsense Yorkshireman Wycliffe delves into the depths of human frailty as he works through various murder cases. Amongst the strengths of this show are its depiction of the real Cornwall, coastal and rural, and the poignantly melancholic understanding that solved crimes rarely mean happy endings. Each storyline is taut and gripping, the characters believable and the scenery breathtaking. Wycliffe remains one of my favourite detective dramas. There are two boxsets available, a Dutch import or a British release. The Dutch import's cheaper and the menus in Dutch are easy to understand, with the episode titles in English. Dutch subtitles are easily switched off but there are no English subtitles. The British release doesn't have subtitles either, so if you don't mind 'speel alles' instead of 'play all' and 'afleveringen' instead of 'episode selection' you may as well save yourself a fair bit of money and buy the Dutch import. Either way, though, Wycliffe is brilliant drama.

We bought this because we like the original series on tv. All fine so far with on exception, I couldn't understand the reviewer who said that each story was divided into 4 parts. Now I know, the morons who produced the DVDs have left the commercial breaks in every episode! Thank God they didn't include the old adverts.

Yes, this a Dutch product but the menu is simple to understand and the subtitles can be turned off, so essentially it becomes an English version. I have watched all the episodes and the ten DVD's play fine. I have a multi region DVD player so that may the reason why some reviewers had issues with playing certain disks.The customer who mentions they have a problem with the language etc, the product is in English, you just need to turn off the subtitles from the opening menu on each disc. Okay, the text overview on the sleeve is in Dutch but that's a small price to pay.No need to purchase the English only version, this is much lower cost for pretty much the same product. Hope this helps.

I remember watching this series when it first arrived on TV back in 1993. I have been watching the repeats on Freeview and every episode is top notch. The locations in Cornwall are wonderful and the characters at least have personalities. I have been waiting for this series to be released for years and finally, Network have put all episodes, including the pilot and christmas specials, together in one set. The quality of the early episodes are a little fuzzy but this does not spoil this great series. One thing we do very well in the UK is quality detective drama - far superior than what the US can do. Wycliffe has great characters, locations and stories, well worth adding to your collection.

I love detective/police mystery dramas. This is one of the best. It's a must gave foe any mystery drama fans.

WYCLIFFE IS FILMED IN CORNWALL, SPOKEN IN ENGLISH SO WHY ON EARTH PUT GERMAN SUBTITLES! IF YOU SEND ME THE ADDRESS TO RETURN IT I WILL. I WONT CHANCE ANOTHER SET SO CAN I HAVE A FULL REFUND?

Really enjoyed this show that I came across by chance. I am almost done the fourth of five season and only one show failed to play all the way through but it was a used set and the price was low and I really can't complain. I have read some reviews saying a show about miserable people doing their jobs. Well, sometimes people are not happy and yet they need to keep working. For me this show really showing the human struggle side of being a police officer or detective is refreshing. They cut a few characters that I liked as they went into season five but overall a really good show. Glad I brought the complete set at a low price and if all the rest of the shows work I will probably end up buying a replacement season for season that had the episode that didn't work toward the end. That is how much I like it. I will admit that the show has some strange aspects, often an episode ends where you would really like to see and hear a few more things but it is a good show.

I could see nothing wrong with this series of DVD's. It arrived on the due date and in good condition only the program was not the kind of entertainment I like.

Classic detective

I want good stories, writing and acting without the nudity, sex, and lectures!!! Propaganda and brainwashing have become standard in BBC & Hollywood! I don't like it. Wycliffe is enjoyable watching.

Thoroughly enjoyed the programme.Received the DVD's as promised, on time.
