Lost Treasure!
I was SO happy to find a Catherine Cookson book that was 'new' to me. I have read her other books many times over the years, but this one just came to my attention at Amazon! (Thanks, Amazon!)The story line included some violence, but it was not explicitly detailed. Very carefully and well written...definitely NOT excessive violent descriptions. The story line included mention of romance between a married woman and another man. No explicit details. Handled the story line in an appropriate manner. The story line held my attention beautifully. I hated to put it down. I highly recommend this author.....her books are outstanding!

Good, not great
The Girl is a good book. However, as a fan of Catherine Cookson I can only compare this to "The Dwelling Place" and "Katy Mulholland" and this one isn't in the same league.Too many contrived circumstances and too many plot twists that make no sense. The characters (especially Ned) are not completely developed so you feel like you don't really know these folks. It's an enjoyable book but it won't take you long to forget the characters.

The Girl--priceless!
I'm rarely disappointed by Catherine Cookson. Her talent and imagination threaded twists and turns throughout, ultimately resulting in a captivating read to the end. This author truly understood human nature with its frailties, passion, and timeless capacity for cruelty. She would have been well-acquainted with the strength only love can bestow.

Quintessential Catherine Cookson
Love all the books I've read of Catherine Cookson's, some more than others, and 'The Girl' is one of my favorites. She's such a great story teller and her hero's and heroine's are multi-faceted and flawed. My favorite book, and the first I read, was 'Katie Mulholland', and 'The Girl' has now become my second favorite. It was worth looking for a good used copy and waiting for it to arrive. A perfect summer read.

The girl was just like her mother....
Very interesting once you get started. After you get over the rough facts of daily living for women and children during a period of time when food and shelter could been lost in a heartbeat, the characters remain true to form. It is amazing how cruel some people can be. Somehow you wind up at the end of the book thinking that deceit not only worked, but was justified.

A very moving novel!
I've grown up surrounded by Catherine Cookson novels and TV adaptations since I was a nipper, due to both my mother and grandmother being huge fans. Despite that though, this is the first, (and it will be the first of many), of her books that I have now read and I enjoyed every single minute of it. I could not, for the life of me, put this book down. I lost myself within the characters and I absolutely bawled my eyes out when I turned the last page. The Girl is a treasure, an absolute gem, and I know that I will revisit it time and time again.

A true love story
As always a really good book. Catherine Cookson writes about those years with such knowledge you are almost taken there. Hard to understand how people endured those times and the things they were forced to do.
