Can smaller-size jars be used?

Absolutely. You'll just use less water because they are not as tall. Don't get tempted to stack the jars just because they are smaller. Only can one layer of jars at once.

How HIGH is this pot, the measurements listed seem unclear. Also how WIDE? Thanks.

The inside of the pot is 9 3/4 deep and going across, it 13 1/4 measuring on the inside of the pot. It's able to handle the large mason jars without crowding. Hope this helps.
