It's a good book. It says that learning the art of self-observation will help keep you sane. You can learn the art of self-observation by keeping a journal. It is a great effort by the philosopher Alain Botton (series editor) and Phillipa Perry, the author. It would be nice if more psychotherapists wrote simple and useful books on how to be mentally healthy. Another good book on the subject is Dr Janette Rainwater's You're In Charge: A guide to becoming your own therapist, but this book is hard to get.

It's a book that people need to read
A wonderfully simple book; I think all the books of this series are.Not a lot in the book that I didn't already know, but that's because I have read a few self help books along similar lines. There is plenty of useful advice in there for everybody and it's a book I will be re-reading and recommending to plenty of people. It's a book that people need to read.

Deceptively simple, profoundly helpful book
Fab book. Read when I was going through a very stressful period and undoubtably self sabotaging. Just reading Philippa Perry’s book was a comfort as I felt less alone - understanding that most of us have these psychological crash periods from time to time. There are great tools here to help you both understand why we create chaos around us, how we can stop ourselves doing that and how we can prevent or limit the risk of it happening again. I highly recommend to anyone wishing to become more self aware and more in control of their own psychological development.

Easy to read, useful
This book is well written & simple to read. Literally anyone could use it, there's some really helpful exercises in it which I've started to use regularly, and actually find that they help put life into perspective. I'd say the only bit that readers should be aware of is that there's a section on family history & how this has impacted, which could be reverted to friends & influences if family ties are very difficult or painful. Although I did have a few insights into my own dysfunctional family (!) in this chapter. Overall a helpful little book

Philippa Perry's just hits home with every sentence she writes. I just ove her calm, reassuring manner and style. Little exercises to apply what you have learned. A little life safer whenever the mental balance is at stake and whenever you feel life is getting ahead of you.

A small but fascinating book
A great book, especially for the times we are living in. So much to be explored within such a small book, fascinating insights and great exercises to try out once you're finished reading. It really helped me gain some perspective and I love the emphasis on self- observation and changing the stories we tell about ourselves.
