I laser cut the holes in the wood first.** A: I don't see why you couldn't. I use crafter's chip board, and your covers probably won't be that much thicker. You would have to laser the holes at a 3:1 ratio as that is the size coils are sold for this machine. The only snag might be coil size. I have only found them as large as 9/15", so depending on how large of a book you are making that might get tight. There is also a bit of a learning curve to getting nice round coils. The trick is to push the ready to bind coil up against the back wall, rest your pages on the top and squeeze the handle down slowly. Otherwise you end up with an oval. **Q: What is the biggest wire you can use and what brand of coils do I order with it?** A: Either 1.5 or 2.0 inches **Q: Do you have a machine that can bind 200 pages of 80gsm paper? I was quickly able to figure out how to hole punch what I needed, plus this 3-in-1 machine also allows you to easily hang any wire bindings (you purchase separately) on the back little hooks, thereby allowing you to thread your book easily, and then utilize the opening crimped part in the top to close/pinch the wire bindings together (which you choose easily what size bindings you have). I’ve built about 200 notebooks already with this machine and it’s held up to everything.NOTE: it says it can punch holes into 20 pages at a time, but I find that a difficult feat in strength.
