## Overview

The StarTech SATA to USB Adapter (USB3S2SAT3CB) is a compact, bus-powered cable that connects 2.5" SATA SSDs or HDDs to USB-A ports, delivering up to 5Gbps transfer speeds with UASP support for enhanced performance. Compatible across major operating systems and requiring no drivers, it offers a portable, plug-and-play solution ideal for quick backups, data recovery, and drive upgrades. Designed for professionals who demand speed and convenience, it comes with a 2-year warranty and lifetime technical support.

## Description

This SATA to USB cable is an external drive adapter that gives you quick and easy access to a SATA drive through the USB-A port on a laptop. Upgrade the Drive on Your Laptop This SATA solid-state (SSD) or hard drive (HDD) adapter lets you upgrade to an external 2.5"" SATA SSD or HDD. The cable lets you: add drive space, perform backups, create disk images, implement data recovery, and transfer content between the drive and the laptop. The hard drive converter externally connects directly to your hard drive connector and your computer's USB port. Faster Transfer Speeds with UASP The cable supports USB 3.0 data transfer speeds of 5Gbps. But, you can experience transfer speeds up to 70% faster than conventional USB 3.0, when connected to a computer that also supports UASP. With UASP you can utilize the full potential of a SATA III SSD or HDD. UASP is supported in Windows 8, Mac OSX (10.8 or above), and Linux. In testing, UASP performs with a 70% faster read speed and 40% faster write speed over traditional USB 3.0 at peak performance. At the same peak in testing, UASP also shows an 80% reduction in required processor resources. Connect from Anywhere The SATA to USB cable is a portable solution that tucks away nicely in a laptop bag -- no external power is required. The cable lets you easily swap between drives with no need to install the drive inside an enclosure. It’s plug-and-play and doesn’t require drivers. USB3S2SAT3CB is backed by 2-year warranty and free lifetime technical support.

Review: Fast and Reliable Way to Access Drives - Fast and Reliable Way to Access Drives This StarTech SATA to USB 3.0 cable turned out to be a real problem-solver for me. I had a couple of older 2.5" SSDs and HDDs sitting around from previous laptop upgrades, and this adapter made it incredibly easy to plug them into my computer and pull data off quickly. Setup couldn’t be simpler—just connect the drive, plug in the USB, and it’s ready to go without any extra drivers. Performance-wise, I was impressed. Transfers felt fast, with the USB 3.0 keeping things smooth even for larger files. I tested it on both an SSD and a traditional spinning hard drive, and in both cases, it was stable without disconnects or lag. The compact design is another plus—it doesn’t take up much space in a drawer or bag, so it’s easy to keep handy for whenever you need it. A couple of small notes: this only works with 2.5” drives (not the larger 3.5” desktop ones), and since it’s a cable rather than an enclosure, the drive is left exposed while in use. That’s fine for quick jobs, but if you’re planning to keep a drive connected all the time, an enclosure might be a better fit. Bottom line: A reliable, convenient tool for quick drive access and data recovery—definitely worth having in any tech toolkit.
Review: Great addition to a computer maintenance toolset. Recommended - My parents experienced a hardware failure with their old PC, so I decided to get them an Intel NUC (the one that only has M.2 storage). Usually I'd just hook up the old HD/SSD to a spare SATA port and transfer the data, but that wasn't going to be an option this time. I found an old 2.5/3.5" HDD dock, but it was only USB 2.0. A quick search yielded this item, supporting USB 3.0 AND available Prime 1-day! Packaging/Appearance There isn't much to the item, as it's only a cable... USB-A on one end, and SATA+SATA power on the other. It resembles a SAS connection, but it's not quite the same. The build quality seems adequate, and there didn't appear to be any fit or finish issues. Installation/Use There isn't a lot that can go wrong with a product like this... it either works, or it doesn't. As long as you stay under the current limits of a USB 3.x port (assuming you have it hooked up to a USB 3.x port), you should be fine. Please note that the device itself takes some power, so you'll want to factor that in. Generally speaking, you're fine for all SSDs, and all but a few edge case 2.5" magnetic HDDs. While this type of thing isn't meant to be used as a full-time storage interface, it performs ok. Ultimately you're limited by the USB interface - while the bus bandwidth is technically greater than 6Gbit/s SATA, you will find that the performance is significantly lower. I ran some ATTO benches to check SATA vs. USB->SATA, and it bore this out. Regardless, it's still fast... in my case, I was able to transfer about 240GB to the new PC in about 5 minutes. Large numbers of small files are a weak spot. I've used this without issue in Windows 10, Server 2016, and Linux. Depending on your BIOS you can even boot from it (though I'm not sure why you'd want to do that). Conclusion I regard a device like this as cheap insurance, since you never know when you'll need to recover some data. I would think that a normal use case might be transferring data from a laptop HDD to another laptop. I definitely think anyone who's considering this item should get one.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: While listed as only for a 2.5 HDD, has anyone tested this on a Desktop 3.5 HDD?**
A: This will not work on a 3.5 drive. The USB power supply is 5V. The 2.5 drives only use a 5V power rail, which is why this works on them. 3.5 drives have a 12V power rail, along with the 5V power rail. To run a 3.5 drive, you need an external 12V power supply. There are interfaces that come with it.

**Q: USB 3.0 to 2.5" SATA III Hard Drive Adapter Cable w/UASP ... Great! Is this thing USB 2.0 backward compatible in case I need it that way?**
A: I've been able to use these with SSD's and USB 2.0. Usually laptop HDD's pull too much power to work on 2.0, and I've seen a couple older ones pull too much for 3.0. I work in a computer repair shop where we use these things like crazy, and it often depends on the drive you're using, and whether your USB port is able to push the power it's supposed to be rated for. Feels like a coin flip if you're working with a platter drive, but SSD's do fine.

**Q: 2.5" drives don't require a power adaptor? All I need is this cable?**
A: Yes. I had an SSD drive connected to the back of a server's USB 3 port for weeks without issue with no external power adapter.

**Q: Is this compatible with the Samsung Data Migration / Magician tools? They will not detect my drive with the other adapters I own.**
A: I just ran into this issue with a Samsung 500 Gb 860 EVO SSD. The Samsung Magician Software did not see the SSD. There was a suggestion on one of Samsung's support sites (user community) that the bios settings for the HDD controller could be at fault. I checked mine and they were set to RAID (even though I don't have a RAID configuration). The recommended setting is AHCI. I changed it to AHCI (despite the warning that the computer might fail to boot) and rebooted. Rebooted without an issue, but Magician still didn't "recognize" the SSD as a Samsung "compatible" drive. I then downloaded Samsung Data Migration tool, which is really what you need for the cloning. IT WORKED. So as indicated elsewhere, there is some issue with certain combinations of Samsung software and the newer SSD's. I will try to remember to test it with an older USB 2.0 -> SATA adapter I've used in the past without issue. In the end, the cable worked as advertised.
