The Duck Knight Returns spoof cover sends the message that the creators not only love DW, but they also know and love comics in general. That being said, although the imagery looks exactly like the cartoons, the pop culture references as well as the surprisingly adult, yet easy-to-understand themes like economic recession, dangerous technology, and evil corporations would make this an enjoyable read for adults and maybe kids 9 and up, I think a lot of the humor would be lost on kids any younger than that, although the imagery will always be cool to look at. Personally, I think the humor in this book takes the already-good cartoon humor and pushes it a bit closer to something like the Simpsons, where current events and things in the modern-day zeitgeist are regularly lampooned. Although this was a 90's cartoon, this was written with a more modern-day comic aesthetic, to the book's benefit. As a result, it reads like a cartoon storyboard with plenty of action and splash art instead of being overly wordy like a lot of 90's comics. I thought when Disney refused to release the third volume of the Darkwing Duck TV shoe on DVD we had seen the end, that my childhood hero had hung up his famed fedora and cape forever, but then the kind and ingenious Aaron Sparrow brought us the surprising gift of revitaling the fandom, not only bringing back classic baddies like the Fearsome Five and Darkwings first archnemisis, Tauris Bulba, but maining the surprisingly heartfelt relationship between DW and his spirited adopted daughter, Gosalyn. It even pays homage to the spoof origins in Batman which Darkwing was based off by furthering the downward mental spiral of Quackerjack ala The Joker, and let's not forget the epic teamup of guest star Magica Despell with my eternally favorite character of all time, Negaduck. In short, I can't rave about the awesomeness of this book enough.
