This means that these tools are ready to carve with out of the box. We recommend the sharpened sets for beginner carvers who don't have sharpening experience because: 1. Beginners can get started carving right away 2. When you're just starting out, sharpening curved gouges can be difficult. The pre-sharpened tools will give beginners a sharpening template to learn from. The factory sharpened sets are the same profiles and made from the same high quality material. These tools are factory ground and, like most sets, will need to be sharpened to the carving preferences of the carver before use. **Q: Do these tools work well for linocut stampmaking?** A: I think they are too big for that kind of work. **Q: Where are they manufactured** A: I checked the knives, bit did not see a country of origin stamp on the. My advice, however, is spend a few more dollars and buy some higher quality knives. The Schaaf blades were dull upon receipt and don’t hold a sharpness for very long. I’ll keep them, but will just have to sharpen them often.
